Alexander Cheyne was baptized, 23 May 1842, in MacDuff, Gamrie Parish, Banff, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Births, Parish of Gamrie, Volume 3, Village of Macduff, 1820-1854: "Alexander L. S. (lawful son) to Alex'r Cheyne, tailor in Macduff and Jane Forbes, his wife, was born 29th Dec'r 1841 & baptized 23rd May 1842 before witnesses Alex'r Cheyne Sen'r & John Cheyne (the child's uncle) in Macduff".²

Also present was his child, Jane Forbes Cheyne. All family members were indexed Chyne.. He was 39 years old and born in Gamrie Parish.⁵

Alexander Cheyne and his wife Mary Ann Cheyne were listed on the 1881 Scotland Census, at Castle Street, in Cullen, Cullen Parish, Banff, Scotland. He was head of household and a tailor. Also present were his children, Maggie Gardiner Cheyne, Jane Forbes Cheyne and Alexander William Cheyne.⁶

Alexander Cheyne and his wife Mary Ann Cheyne were listed on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 51 Castle Street, in Cullen, Cullen Parish, Banff, Scotland. He was head of household and a tailor. Also present were his children, Alexander Cheyne and Maggie Cheyne. Also present was his mother-in-law, Margaret Gardiner, 80, living on private means.. Alexander was 49 years of age and born in MacDuff.⁷
