From the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Fordyce, Banffshire 1775-1819. “Feb’y 14th (1787) John Cheyne in Dykehead had a Child by his Wife Ann Ruddiman baptized called John, Witnefses John Gray and John Donald both in Dykehead".3

The baptismal record of Isobel Cheyne documented John Cheyne as her father, 21 February 1789, in Gamrie Parish, Banff, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Gamrie, Volume 2, 1757-1819 "Feb'y 18 & 21 (1789) Isobel Lawful Daughter to John Cheyne in Newtown of Melrose & Anne Ruddiman was born Feb'y 18 & baptized the 21st. Witnefses Alex'r Dawson & Tho's Wilson both in Newtown of Melrose".4,5

The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Gamrie, Volume 2, 1757-1819 "March 10th & 18th (1795) Janet L. D. (lawful daughter) to John Chine in Newtown of Melrose & Anne Rudiman his Wife was born March 10th & bapt'd 18th. Witnefses Thomas Wilson & John Barber in the Town".7,8,9

John witnessed the baptism of William Barber, the son of John Barber. John Barber witnessed the baptism of Janet Cheyne in 1795. The following is a transcription from the Register of Births, Parish of Gamrie, Volume 2, 1757-1819: "William, L. S. (lawful son) to John Barber in Newton of Melrofe & Janet Howit his wife was born August 19th (1799) & baptized the 26th. Witnefses Alex'r Dawson and John Chine both in the Town".10

If his daughter, Janet, was the Janet Cheyne that married William MacIntosh, the following was submitted by an informant about her father. "All that is known of the Cheyne family is that Janet's father served with the Black Watch in the Peninsula War".11
