     Alexander Cheyne married Elizabeth Bate 22 April 1771, in Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The couple was also married in Brechin Parish, Angus, 26 April 1771, the record reads in part "Mr. Alexander Cheyne, Merchant in Aberdeen and Mifs Betty Bate, lawful daughter to Mr. James Bate, late preacher of the Gospel at Tranent were Matrimonially Contracted".1,2

There was a sasine in Banffshire dated 15 June 1771 that included Alexander Cheyne (7359), merchant, in Aberdeen. No other Cheynes were included.3

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, Alexander Cheyne, on 26 November 1772, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 16, reads: "twenty sixth (November 1772) Alexander Chyne, Merchant & Elizabeth Bait, his spouse, had a Son born, named Alexander, baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, in Presence of Doctor Alexander Robertson and Andrew Walter, William Duguid & John Ewan, Merchant."4,5

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, Peter Cheyne, on 12 April 1774, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 33, reads:" Eodem Die (12 April 1774) Alexander Cheyn, Merchant & Elisabeth Bate, his Spouse, had a Son born, named Peter, baptized by the Rev'd Mr. Abercrombie, in presence of Dr Alex'r Robertson & John Ewan, Merchant, both in Aberdeen".6,7

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, William Cheyne, on 5 September 1775, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 49, reads:" Fifth (August 1775) Alexander Cheyne, Merch't & Elisabeth Bait, his Spouse, had a Son born, named William, baptized by the Rev'd Mr. Thomas Forbes, in presence of George Strachan Keith, Esq'r of (Afforsgue?) and Hugh Gordon, Watch-maker, both in Aberdeen."8,9

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his daughter, Elizabeth Cheyne, on 11 March 1777, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 61, reads: "Eleventh (March 1777) Alexander Cheyne, Merch't and Elisabeth Bait, his spouse, had a daughter born, named Elisabeth, baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, in prefence of George Strachan Keith of Aguhorsk, Esq'r & Baillie William Cruden, both here."10,11

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, John Cheyne, on 14 December 1778, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 79, (top of page) reads: "Aberdeen, Dec'r the fourteenth 1778 Mr. Alexander Cheyne, Merch't & Mrs. Elisabeth Bate, his Spouse, had a Son born,named John, baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, in presence of Baillie Cruden Dr. Alex'r Robertson."12,13

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, Charles Cheyne, on 29 December 1780, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 98, reads: "Twenty-ninth (December 1780) Mr. Alexander Cheyne, Merch't & Mrs. Elisabeth Bate, his Spouse, had a Son born, named Charles, Baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, Dr. Robertson, Baillie Will'm Cruden & George Strachan Keith, Esq'r, Witnefses."14,15

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his daughter, Margaret Cheyne, on 7 January 1782, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 110, reads: "Seventh (June 1782) Alexander Cheyne, Merchant here & Elizabeth Bate, his Spouse, had a Daughter born, named Margaret, Baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, Baillie Will'm Cruden, Dr. Alex'r Robertson & George Strachan Keith, Esq'r of Aquhorque, Witnefses."16,17

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, George Cheyne, on 25 September 1783, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 125, reads: "Twenty fifth (September 1783) Alexander Cheyne, Merchant here & Elizabeth Bate, his Wife, had a Son born, named George, Baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, Dr. Alexander Robertson & George Strachan Keith of Aquhorsk, Esq'r, Witnefses."18,19

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, William Cheyne, on 31 May 1785, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 156, reads: "Twentieth (May 1785) Alexander Cheyne, Merch't & Elifabeth Bate, his wife, had a Son born, named William, Baptized the 31st of said Month, by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, Provost. William Cruden & Mr George Cruden, Merchants, Witnefses."20,21

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, Henry Cheyne, on 4 July 1786, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 168, reads: "Fourth (July 1786) Alexander Cheyn, Merch't & Elizabeth Bate, his wife, had a son born, named Henry, baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie, Dr. Robertson, Physician & George Strachan Keith of Aquhursk, Esq'r, Witnefses."22,23

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen, Merchant, in Aberdeen, witnessed the christening of his son, Euphemia Cheyne, on 4 October 1788, at Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The entry in the Saint Nicholas, Register of Baptisms, 1771-1798, frame 193, (top of page) reads: "Aberdeen, October fourth 1788, Alexander Cheyne, Merch't & Elizabeth Bate, his wife, had a Dau'r born, named Euphemia, Baptized by the Rev'd Mr. George Abercrombie; George Strachan Keith of Affrosk, John Ewan, Merch't, Witnefses."24,25,26

There was a Roll of the Inhabitants of Aberdeen, taken in 1795, the purpose of which was to identify those citizens who were qualified to elect as well as those qualified to be elected commissioners. Three Cheynes appeared, all merchants; two Alexanders, and, a Christian. One of the Alexanders was qualified to have been elected a commissioners. He was probably Alexander (7359), who lived in area 16. His son Alexander (7361) lived in area 2, and Christian in area 11. Christian's father was a tailor and she probably carried on his business.27

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen had a loan payable to Patrick Cheyne Farmer in Redford of Undy in the amount of £182 16 and 6 due on 20 June 1801. Any relationship between the two is unknown.28

Alexander Cheyne Merchant in Aberdeen died 16 December 1805. The inventory of his effects as recorded at the Aberdeen Commissary Court in accordance with his will stated that he died "16 December last".29

His estate was probated on 27 December 1805 at Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.29
