     James Cheyne was born, 21 August 1869, in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland.1,2,3

Tulloch Cheyne, Ellen Cheyne and James Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Charles Cheyne and his wife, Christina Cheyne on the 1871 Scotland Census, at 6 South Holywood Street, in Edinburgh, Saint Cuthberts Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was indexed James Fulloth (all but the head of household were indexed with that surname), 1 year old and born in Edinburgh.4

The attached is a photo of 3 East Arthur Place. A photographic survey was carried out in Dumbiedykes area before its demolition. The Edinburgh Central Library holds that survey. This photo was from that collection. 9 and 14 East Arthur Place would have been very close and of similar style.5

Tulloch Cheyne, Helen Cheyne, Christina Cheyne, James Cheyne, Peter Cheyne and William Brown Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Charles Cheyne and his wife, Christina Cheyne on the 1881 Scotland Census, at 14 East Arthur Place, in Edinburgh, Saint Cuthberts Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was also listed as a scholar.6

Helen Cheyne, James Cheyne, Peter Cheyne, Christina Cheyne and William Brown Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Charles Cheyne and his wife, Christina Cheyne on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 3 Milton Street, in Edinburgh, Saint Cuthberts Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was 21 years of age, born in Edinburgh and an upholsterer.7

James Cheyne immigrated about 1892, to the USA. He was listed as having immigrated in 1892 on the 1900 US Census. The 1910 and 1930 US Censuses listed the date as 1893.8,9

James Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 1 March 1893, at Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He was a passenger aboard the Peruvian, out of Glasgow. He was 21 years old, an upholsterer, who last resided in Scotland and was destined for Boston.10

James Cheyne married Catherine Ewing 5 March 1895, in Manchester, New Hampshire, USA.11,12

James Cheyne and Kate Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 10 September 1895, at Liverpool, Lancashire, England. They were passengers aboard the Lake Winnipeg, out of Boston. James was 25 and an upholsterer, Kate was 21 and a wife. Both were of Scotch descent.13

James Cheyne and Kate Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 20 January 1896, at New York, New York, USA. They were on a Manifest of Passengers aboard the Servia, Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland. James was 26 and an upholsterer. Kate was 22 and his wife. Both was citizens of Scotland, carried two pieces of luggage, intended a protracted sojourn and boarded at Liverpool.11

James Cheyne was listed on the 1900 United States Census at 21 Francis Street, in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. He was a boarder in the household of Alice Warner, boarding house keeper. He was listed as single and employed as an upholsterer. Both his parents were born in Scotland. He was a Naturalized US Citizen.8

James Cheyne married Janet McKinnon Boag 18 December 1901, in Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. They were listed on the 1910 US Census as having been married for eight years.14,9

James Cheyne and Mrs. Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated February 1902, at Boston, Massachusetts, USA. They were Second Cabin passengers aboard the Ivernia, out of Liverpool on the 18th of February. James was 31 years and five months old, an upholsterer and had been in the United States for nine years. She was 23 and had been in the United States one year. They had been married one year, citizens of Scotland and were returning to their home at 27 Howard Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts.15

Also present were his children, Charles Cheyne, Annie Cheyne and Helen Cheyne. The family rented their home.9

James Cheyne was named a brother and the person that William Cheyne was coming to join on a passenger list on 26 November 1912. He resided at Bay State Park, Finn Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts.18

James Cheyne and his wife Janet Cheyne were listed on the 1920 United States Census, at 32 Greenway Street, in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. He was head of household and a owner of an awning shop. Also present were his children, Charles Cheyne, Annie Cheyne, Helen Cheyne, Mabel Cheyne, Elizabeth Cheyne and Catherine Cheyne. The family rented their home.19

James Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 1 August 1926, at Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. He was a third class passenger aboard the Transylvania, out of New York. He was going to be staying at 8 Smithfield Street, Edinburgh. He was 57, an upholsterer and a citizen of the United States.13

James Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 20 September 1926, at New York, New York, USA. He was on a Manifest of U S Citizen Passengers aboard the Caledonia, out of Glasgow, 11 September. He was 57 and married. He carried US Passport 177289 and obtained citizenship at District Court, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, April 1906. His address was given as 39 Gale Avenue, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania (it was Pittsfield, Massachusetts).20

James Cheyne and Janet Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 17 July 1928, at Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Also present was their daughter Helen Cheyne. They were third class passengers aboard the Transylvania, out of New York. They were going to be staying at the Sealscraig Hotel in South Queensferry. James was 59 and an upholsterer, Janet 48, housewife, and, Helen, 21, single and a clerk. All were citizens of the United States.13

James Cheyne and Janet Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 17 September 1928, at New York, New York, USA. Also present was their daughter Helen Cheyne. They were on a Manifest of US Citizen Passengers aboard the Cameronian, out of Glasgow, 8 September. James was 59, Janet, 50, and Helen, 21 and single. James became a citizen, 10 October 1904, at District Court, Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Helen was born 20 November 1906, Pittsfield. They resided at 39 Gale Avenue, Pittsfield.17

James Cheyne and his wife Janet Cheyne were listed on the 1930 United States Census, at 39 Gale Avenue, in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. He was head of household and a upholsterer in an upholstery shop. Also present were his children, Helen Cheyne, Elizabeth Cheyne and Catherine Cheyne. She and her parents were said to have been born in Scotland.. The family owned their home. He and his parents were said to have been born in Scotland.16

James Cheyne and Janet Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 26 July 1931, at Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Also present was their daughter Annie Cheyne. They were third class passengers aboard the Caledonia, out of New York. The were listed as aliens and held return passage to the United States. They were travelling to the Seals Craig Hotel in South Queensferry. He was 62 and an upholsterer, she was 52 and a housewife and Annie was 26 and a secretary.13

James Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 20 September 1931, at New York, New York, USA. He was on a Manifest of U S Citizen Passengers aboard the Tuscania, out of Glasgow, 11 September. He was 62 and married. He carried US Passport 406689 and obtained citizenship at District Court, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, 10 October 1904. His address was given as 39 Gale Avenue, Pittsfield, Massachusetts.21

James was the father of Mabel Cheyne, who provided much of the information regarding this family. James was an upholsterer and awning manufacturer.14

James Cheyne and his wife Jeanette Cheyne were listed on the 1940 United States Census, at 39 Gale Avenue, in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. He was head of household and a upholsterer. Also present were his children, Mary Randall, Mabel Cheyne and Catherine Rushbrook. In addition, two sons-in-law, John Randall, and two grandchildren, an unknown person , were also present. The couple owned their home which was valued at $3000. All had been in the same house in 1935.. He was 70 years of age and born in Scotland and a naturalized citizen.3

James Cheyne died 7 July 1955 in Pittsfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA.14
