The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Lonmay, 1758-1819, Page 185, "Sept'r 2d (1809) William Cheyne (521) in Park had a Son baptized named James (580) Witnesses William Bruce and James Keith there.”.1

The baptismal record of George Cheyne documented James Cheyne, in Park, as his father, 22 February 1835, at Park, in Lonmay Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Lonmay, 1820-1854, Page 51, "February 22nd 1835 James Cheyne (580) in Park had a child baptized named George (1034). Witnesses William (521) and George Cheyne (548) in Park.” He may have been born in Strichen Parish and baptized in Lonmay.2

James Cheyne married Margaret Beaton 9 August 1838, in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Marriages, Parish of Peterhead, 1820-1854, Page 100/353, "August 9th (1838) James Cheyne (580), Mason & Margaret Beaton (621) both in this parish.”.3

The baptismal record of James Beaton Cheyne documented James Cheyne as his father, 8 October 1838, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 102, "Oct'r 8th (1838) James Cheyne (580), Mason in Peterhead had a Son baptized named James Beaton (622) before Peter Beaton (1343) and John Copland (549).”.4

James Cheyne witnessed the christening of his niece, Elizabeth Cheyne, on 2 April 1839, at Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 113, "April 2nd (1839) George Cheyne (548), Mason in Peterhead had a daughter in fornication, born 3rd March, baptized and named Elizabeth (973), before James Cheyne (580) & Will'm Milne.”.5

The baptismal record of Margaret Cheyne documented James Cheyne, mason, in Peterhead, as her father, 29 December 1839, at East Church, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 139, "Dec'r 29th (1839) James Cheyne (580) Mason in Peterhead had a daughter, born 20th Dec'r, baptized and named Margaret (623), before congregation of the East Church.”.6

James Chyne was listed on the 1841 Scotland Census, at Kirk Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a journeyman mason. Also in the household were Margaret Chyne, James Chyne, Margret Chyne, George Chyne, Peter Beaton and John Beaton. Peter Beaton was his father-in-law; and, John Beaton was his brother-in-law. James was listed as age 30 and born in Aberdeenshire.7

The baptismal record of William Cheyne documented James Cheyne, mason, in Peterhead, as his father, 6 March 1842, at East Church, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 168, "March 6th (1842) James Cheyne (580), Mason in Peterhead had a son, born 20th Feb'ry, baptized and named William (581), before the congregation of the East Church.”.8

The baptismal record of John Cheyne documented James Cheyne, mason, in Peterhead, as his father, 12 November 1843, at Free Church of Scotland, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 202, "Nov'r 12th (1843) James Cheyne (580), Mason in Peterhead had a son, born 22nd Oct'r, baptized and named John (625), before the congregation of the Free Church.”
An later entry in the same Register of Baptisms reads as follows: Pages 538 & 539 (109), [This entry was placed in the register considerably after the fact and with three other entries of the same family.] "1843 October 22nd James Cheyne (580), Mason, in Peterhead, and Margaret Beaton (621), his wife, had a son born, baptized & named John (625).”.9

The baptismal record of Alexander William Cheyne documented James Cheyne, mason, in Peterhead, as his father, 18 September 1845, at Invernettie, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Pages 538 & 539 (110), [This entry was placed in the register considerably after the fact and with three other entries of the same family.] "1845 September 18th James Cheyne (580), Mason, in Peterhead or Invernetty, and Margaret Beaton (621), his wife, had a son born, baptized & named Alexander (626).”.10

A James Cheyne witnessed a baptism in Peterhead Parish which reads: "Dalziel. William shoemaker in Peterhead and Agnes Gear his wife, a daug. Elizabeth Hay born 08 Oct 1848 bap. 02 Nov 1848 before James Gear and James Cheyne" That James was probably either (580) or (3972).11

The baptismal record of Christian Cheyne documented James Cheyne, mason, in Invernetty, as her father, at Invernettie, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Pages 538 & 539 (110), [This entry was placed in the register considerably after the fact and with three other entries of the same family.] "1850 July 14th James Cheyne (580), Mason at Invernetty, and Margaret Beaton (621) his wife, had a daughter born, baptized & named Christian (627)”.10

James Cheyne and his wife Margaret Cheyne were listed on the 1851 Scotland Census, at Gateside, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a mason. Also present were his children, James Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne, William Cheyne, John Cheyne, Alexander Cheyne and Christian Cheyne. He was listed as 40 and born in Lonmay Parish.12

The baptismal record of Andrew Cheyne documented James Cheyne, mason, in Invernetty, as his father, 21 July 1852, at Invernettie, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 377, "July 21st (1852) James Cheyne (580), Mason, Invernettie and Margaret Beaton (621), his wife, had a son born 14th baptized and named Andrew (628), before William Scott and Alexander Smith.13

James Cheyne was listed as a mason on the marriage record of his son George A. Cheyne and Elizabeth Walker, on 22 March 1855; Established Church of Scotland.14

James Cheyne, mason and father of the child, recorded the birth of Robert Cheyne, on 24 September 1855, in Meikle Cocklaw, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The birth record also listed him as 45 years of age, born in Lonmay Parish, Aberdeen and who married Margaret Beaton in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, 1838; at 3 PM.15,16

James Cheyne was listed as a mason on the marriage record of his son James Beaton Cheyne and Eleanor Watson, on 11 December 1860; Free Church of Scotland.17

James Cheyne and his wife Margaret Cheyne were listed on the 1861 Scotland Census, at Gateside, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a mason. Also present were his children, William Cheyne, John Cheyne, Christian Cheyne, Andrew Cheyne and Robert Cheyne. He was listed as 51 years of age and born in Lonmay Parish.18

James Cheyne was listed as a mason on the marriage record of his daughter Margaret Cheyne and Francis Will, on 26 May 1863; Established Church of Scotland.19

James Cheyne was listed as a mason on the marriage record of his daughter Christina Cheyne and Alexander Will, on 19 June 1869; Church of Scotland.20

James Cheyne was listed as a mason on the marriage record of his son Alexander William Cheyne and Elizabeth Jane Anderson, on 2 July 1869; Free Church of Scotland.21,22

James Cheyne and his wife Margaret Cheyne were listed on the 1871 Scotland Census, at 2 King Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a mason. He was 61 years of age and born in Lonmay Parish.23

James Cheyne was listed as a journeyman mason on the marriage record of his son John Cheyne and Mary Ann Gordon Brown, on 1 December 1871; Established Church of Scotland.24

James Cheyne, 2 King Street, Peterhead, recorded the birth of his grand-daughter, Catherine Cheyne, on 6 November 1872, in Maiden Street, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 8:00 AM.25

James Cheyne and his wife Margaret Cheyne were listed on the 1881 Scotland Census, at 3 King Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a mason. Also present was his child, Robert Cheyne. In addition, his grandson, Francis Will, was also present.26

James Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne was in the household of Alexander Will and his wife, Christina Cheyne, and listed as father-in-law on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 1 South Constitution, in Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was 82 years of age, born in Lonmay Parish and a retired mason.27

James Cheyne died 4 April 1894 at 1 South Constitution in Aberdeen, Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.28
