     James Whyte Cheyne was born, 23 February 1916, in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.^1,2

William Cheyne, James W. Cheyne and Mary Craik Cheyne were found on a passenger list with their mother Mary H. Cheyne dated on 1 July 1923 at at Quebec, Quebec, Canada. They were steerage passengers aboard the Metagama out of Glasgow on the 22nd of June. Mary was 28, a housewife, her mother, Mrs. Margaret Whyte, Rockcliffe, Finlayson Street, Fraserburgh was their next of kin in Scotland. They were joining her husband, the children's father, William Cheyne, 5607 Linwood Avenue, Detroit. William was 8, James W. was 7 and Mary Craik was 2. All were listed as born in Duncoon (?), Scotland.^3,4

Cheyne on the 1930 United States Census, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA. He was also listed on the census as having attended school within the past 12 months. The census also listed him as having applied for naturalization in 1923.³

William Cheyne, James Cheyne and Mary Cheyne were listed as children in the household of William Cheyne and his wife, Mary Hood Whyte on the 1940 United States Census, at Greenlawn Avenue, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA.
