Christian Cheyne, Augte Cheyne, James Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne, David Cheyne, Christian Cheyne, William Cheyne and Andrew Cheyne were listed as in the household of William Cheyne on the 1841 Scotland Census, at Lugton, in Dalkeith Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was his son, 5 years of age and born in Midlothian.1

William Cheyne was listed on the 1851 Scotland Census at South Side Of Water Row Or Main Street, in Selkirk, Selkirk, Scotland. William was a lodger in the household of William Smith, labourer. He was 20 years of age, was born in Dalkeith and employed as a plumber.3

William Cheyne married Isabella Wayness 18 February 1853, in Selkirk Parish, Selkirk, Scotland.4

William Cheyne and his wife Isabella Cheyne were listed on the 1861 Scotland Census, at High Street, in Selkirk, Selkirk Parish, Selkirk, Scotland. He was head of household and a master plumber employing one man and one boy. Also present were his children, Isabella Brodie Cheyne, Christina Cheyne, Agnes Mary Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne. All family members were indexed with a surname of Chague. William was listed as 30 years old and born in Dalkeith, Edinburghshire.5

He was head of household and a gas works manager, employing 3 men and 2 boys. Also present were his children, Christina Cheyne, Agnes Mary Cheyne, William David Cheyne, Maggie Cheyne and Alexandra J. G. Cheyne. He was 48 years old and born in Scotland.7

William Cheyne and his wife Isabella Cheyne were listed on the 1891 Wales Census, at 26 Ritson Street, in Briton Ferry, Glamorgan, Wales. He was head of household and a gas engineer. Also present were his children, Christina Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne, John Wayness Cheyne and Alexandra J. G. Cheyne. In addition, a grandchild was present, Herbert W. Butler (11959), age 3, born in Briton Ferry, Glamorgan. All surnames were spelled Chayne. All in the household used only the English language..8

William Cheyne was listed on the 1901 Wales Census, at Gravel Hill, Mynde, in Bucknell Parish, Berconshire, Wales. He was head of household and a widower and "living on own means", age 72. Also present was his child, Maggie Cheyne. In addition, his grandchildren, Hazel Charles and Ronald Geoffrey Cheyne, were also present. The grandchildren's parentage is unknown, therefore, their entries here are assumed.9

William Cheyne died 8 February 1902.10

His estate was probated on 15 May 1902 at London, England.11
