Margaret Cheyne

     Margaret Cheyne was born about 1683. No birth record was found, as she would have been born before the eariest extant Old Parish Registers in Fyvie. She was identified as the daughter of Alexander Cheyne (756), in the original version of the Monquhitter OPR on 19 January 1706, where she and her father witnessed the baptism of Alexander Gerrard. She witnessed baptisms three times in Monuhitter and once in New Deer Parishes; all four times her address was the same as her parents.¹

Jean Urquhart and Margaret Cheyne were named Godmothers at the Christening of Margaret Cassie, 30 May 1704, at Brucehill, in New Deer Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of New Deer, 1684-1726, Page 129, "May: 27: 1704: This day Wm. Cafsie (4593) in Brusishill had a daughter brought forth by his wife (4594) & was baptized May: 30 named Margaret (4596), Godfathers Alex'r Chyne (756) & Gilbert Henderfon (4586) both in Corbfhill, Godmothers Joan Urquhart (760) & Margrat Chyne (4705) in Corbfhill”.²

Alexander Cheyne, Alexander Mitchell and Margaret Cheyne were witnesses at the Christening of Alexander Gerrard, 19 January 1706, at Netherbrownhill, in Monquhitter Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Monquhitter, 1670-1771, Frame 46 “1706 Jan’y 19 John Gerrard in Netherbrownhill had a son baptized named Alex’r Witnefses Alex’r Chin (756) in Keithin Alex’r Mitchel (4629) in Netherbrownhill.”
An earlier version of the Register of Baptisms read: Jan 19 1706 “John Gerard in Netherbrownhill had a son baptized named Alex’r Witnefses Alex’r Chin (756) in Keithin Alex’r Mitchel (4629) in Netherbrownhill Anna Tailzdour & Ifobell Mitchell both in the faid _______ Margaret Chin (4705) daughter to Alex’r Chin in Keithin”..³

The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Monquhitter, 1670-1771, Page 47 “April 28 (1706) John Ogstoun in Keithin had a child baptized named Margaret Witnefses Alex’r Chin (756) in Keithin & George Ogstoun in Monquhitter.”
An earlier version of the Register of Baptisms read: Apr 28 1706 “John Ogstoun in Keithin had a child baptized named Margaret(4664) Witnefses Alex’r Chin (756) in Keithin & George Ogstoun in Mountquhitter. Elizabeth ______ in the Parioch of Methlick & Margaret Chin (4705) in Keithin”..¹

James Hay and Margaret Cheyne were witnesses at the Christening of James Milne, 18 April 1707, at Netherbrownhill, in Monquhitter Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Monquhitter, 1670-1771, Frame 48 “April 18 (1707) Thomas Mill in Netherbrownhill had a child baptized named James Witnefses James Hay (4703) son to Mr. Adam Hay, Min’r & James Mitchell in Netherbrownhill.”
An earlier version of the Register of Baptisms read: (Date not readable) “Thomas Mill in Netherbrownhill had a child baptized named James Witnefses James Hay (4703) fon to Mr Adam Hay Min’r James Mitchell in Netherbrownhill Anna Tailzdour there & Marg’t Chin (4705) in Keithin.”.⁴

Margaret Cheyne married Alexander Reid 30 August 1716, in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, at Fyvie Parish Church, in Fyvie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Marriages, Parish of Fyvie, 1685-1763, Page 289 "Auguft 30 (1716) Alexander Reid and Margaret Chein were orderle married in the church of fyvie before feberall witneffes etr". That Margaret probably was (4705).⁵
