James Petrie married Barbara Cassie.
The baptismal record of Margaret Petrie documented James Petrie as her father, 13 July 1672, at Blachrie, in Fyvie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Monquhitter, 1670-1771, Frame 4 “July 13 (1672) James Petrie in Blackchrie in Fyvie Parish had a daughter baptized whose name was Margaret Witnefses George Cheyn (3009) & Geo Bruce (4627).”.1
William Cheyne and his wife, Helen Black, and their son, James were found at Badichell, Fyvie Parish in the List of Pollable Persons in Aberdeenshire 1696. He was a yeoman tennant of the Laird of Meldrum. There was much witnessing of baptisms and marriages between him and his immediate neighbours. His entry reads as follows: "William Cheyn, in Badiechell, yeaman, tennent [no trade], his proportion of the valued rent is 2s 4d, which, with the generall poll ... 8s 0d.
"Helen Black, his spouse ... 6s 0d.
"James Cheyne, his son, under sixteen years of age, in familia, [not pollable] ... 0s 0d.

The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Fyvie, 1685-1764, Page 81 “Jan’y 19 (1696) Alex’r Greiber in Bodiechell had a daughter baptized called (Lresten?) (entered Christian) witnefses Wm Cheyn (1515) & James petrie (4632) both yr.”.3
