David Johnston Cheyne married May Mortimore Thompson 5 April 1905, in Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada. He was 23 years old, a bachelor, a merchant and was born and resided in Windsor. D. J. Cheyne was named the husband of May Cheyne on a passenger list dated 26 July 1913. He resided in Windsor.10

David Johnston Cheyne was found on a list of military personnel dated 10 March 1916 in Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada. He had signed an Officers' Declaration Paper joining the 99th Batalion of the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force as a Captain. He was employed an assistant tax collector, resided at 169-1/2 Ouellette Avenue, Windsor and was born, 25 April 1880, in Windsor. He was currently with the 21st Regiment, Essex Fusiliers and had been in the Militia for 15 years. His father, Captain George Cheyne, 132 Victoria Avenue, was his next of kin.3

David Cheyne, residing in windsor, recorded the death of his father, George James Cheyne, who died 16 November 1921 at 564 Victoria Avenue, Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada; of bronchial pneumonia.11,12

David ran a grocery business with his brother, John Oliver Cheyne. He later operated an undertaking business which he sold to J. R. Chapin. For a short time he was an officer in the Immigration Service. When the war broke out, he enlisted in the 99th battalion and became a Major, from which he later transferred to the 49th Highlanders of Montreal. Upon return to Windsor, he was appointed assistant to his father in the tax collector's department, from which he resigned in 1924.1

David Johnston Cheyne died 25 December 1925 of pulmonary tuberculosis at General Hospital in Windsor, Essex, Ontario, Canada. He had been hospitalized for two days prior to his death. He was 45 years old and a tax collector. His sister, Mrs. McPhail, recorded his death. His parents were confirmed to be as recorded herein.
