     James Garrick Cheyne was born, 6 November 1894, in Lunan Bay, Forfar, Angus, Scotland.^1,2,3

John R. Cheyne, Margaret M. Cheyne and James G. Cheyne were listed as children in the household of John R. Cheyne and his wife, Cecilia G. Cheyne on the 1901 Scotland Census, at 98 Newhaven Road, in Leith, Leith North, Midlothian, Scotland. He was 6 years of age, born in Luhan Bay, Forfar and a scholar.⁴

According to the information he provided to the US Draft Board in 1917, his previous military experience was three years as an artillery gunner in the service of Great Britain.²

James Garrick Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 25 July 1914, at New York, New York, USA. He was on a Manifest of Alien Passengers aboard the Baltic, out of Liverpool, 16 July. He was marked "Claims to be US Citizen", 19, single, a steam fitter and born in Montrose. His closest relative in Scotland was his sister, Mrs Chroston, 72 Newhaven Road, Leith. He was joining his brother, John R. Cheyne, 828 North Lewler Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.⁵

He was listed on the 1920 and 1930 US Censuses as having immigrated to the USA in 1914.^6,1

James Garrick Cheyne, born 6 November 1894, in Lounan Bay, Forfarshire, Scotland, registered for the draft on 5 June 1917, in Bloomington, McLean, Illinois, USA. He was employed as a Salvation Army Officer, in Bloomington. He was an alien, still a subject of Great Britain, single with no local dependents and resided at 621 East Locust Street, Bloomington, Illinois.²

James Garrick Cheyne was listed on the 1920 United States Census, at 326 East Main Street, in Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa, USA. He was head of household and a Salvation Army Officer. He was listed as a renter, single, age 25 and not yet a US citizen. Also present was a roomer, Charles Mahr, Assistant Salvation Army Officer.⁶

James Garrick Cheyne was naturalized after 1 January 1920 at USA.⁷

James Garrick Cheyne married Dorothy Mace Stanley 20 January 1920. The couple was listed on the 1930 US Census as having been married for approximately ten years.^1,7

James Cheyne was listed on the 1930 United States Census, at 7124 Carpenter Street, in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. He was head of household and a order clerk for the Davis Dry Goods store. Also present were his children, James Cheyne Junior and Edith Cheyne. The family rented their home. He and his parents were said to have been born in Scotland, of Scotch tongue.⁷

James Cheyne and his wife Dorothy Cheyne were listed on the 1940 United States Census, at 3420 West 64th Street, in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. He was head of household and a salesman. Also present were his children, Donald Cheyne, James Cheyne Junior and Edith Cheyne. The family rented their home and were in the "same place" in 1935.. He was listed as 45 years old and born in Scotland and had filed First Papers.³

James Garrick Cheyne served much of his life as a Salvation Army officer, and was a much respected USO Director until shortly before his death, in an automobile accident in Saint Petersburg, Florida, where he had retired.¹

J. G. Cheyne and Dorothy Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 12 July 1955, at New York, New York, USA. They were on a Manifest of Passengers of In-bound US Citizens aboard the Queen Elizabeth out of Southampton, 7 July 1955. He was born in Scotland and she in Nebraska. They had a joint Passport #579310. Their address was 333 Ray Avenue, Fayetteville, North Carolina and carried nine pieces of luggage.⁸

James Garrick Cheyne died 8 October 1960 in Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA.¹
