James Cheyne, Ann Cheyne, Robert Cheyne, Mary A. Cheyne and John Cheyne were listed as children in the household of James Cheyne and his wife, Jane Cheyne on the 1871 Scotland Census, at Redford, in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was 12 years of age, born in Old Machar Parish and a scholar.4

Robert Cheyne was listed on the 1881 Scotland Census at Nutton of Garlogie, in Skene Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was a servant on the farm of Alexander Massie. He was unmarried, age 21,and employed as a farm servant.5

Robert Cheyne and his wife Hellen Cheyne were listed on the 1901 Scotland Census, at Drumhill Croft, in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a crofter and estate labourer. Also present were his children, George Cheyne, Nellie Cheyne and John Cheyne. He was 41 years of age and born in Old Machar Parish, Aberdeen.2

Robert Cheyne,residing at South Culsh, New Deer were named as the parents of James Cheyne, who died in action, on 21 April 1917 and was buried at Anzin-St Aubin British Cemetery, in France; during World War I.7,8

An entry in Calendar of Confirmations and Inventories, 1917, reads as follows: Cheyne, James, Cashier, Free Press Office, residing at 34 Crown Street, Aberdeen, Bombdr., B/255th Brigade, R.F.A., died 21 April 1917, at 49 Field Ambulance, France, testate. Confirmation granted at Aberdeen, 1 September, to Robert Cheyne, Farmer, South Culsh, Parish of New Deer, his father, Universal Legatory, and as such Executor nominate under Will or Deed, dated 5 October 1915, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Aberdeen, 4 September 1917. Value of Estate £120, 14s. 2d".9

Robert Cheyne was granted the probate of the estate of the deceased, James Cheyne, 12 September 1917. The will of James Cheyne was proved 12 September 1917. An abstract of it reads: Cheyne James of 34 Crown Street Aberdeen bombardier R.F.A. died 21 April 1917 at 49 Field Ambulance France Confirmation of Robert Cheyne farmer. Sealed London 12 September"..10

Robert Cheyne died 9 March 1933 at Drumhill in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.11

Robert Cheyne was buried, at Drumoak Parish New Kirkyard, in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. His monumental inscription reads: "In memory of Hellen Barnett, wife of Robert Cheyne, who died at Drumhill, Drumoak 23 Oct. 1931, aged 70 years. Also the above Robert Cheyne who died at Drumhill 9 Mar. 1933, aged 73 years. Also their son George Barnett Cheyne, New Zealand Rifles, killed in action in France 5 Apr. 1918, aged 31 years"..11
