     Helen Lumsden Cheyne was born, 1 April 1832, in New Machar Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1,2

On 29 October 1849. The following is a partial transcription from the Parish Inverugie, Aberdeen, Register of Marriages, 1820-1854: "October 29th 1849. Newhills parish. Compeared Helen Cheyne confessing to be with child. After she was exhorted to accuse no man falsely,disclosed that William Grant was the father. She also stated that the said William Grant sailed for New York about a month ago. She was admonished and dismissed, the minister closed with prayers".3,4

Two or more of the following Helen Cheynes may have been the same person. Helens (1867), (3324), (3348) and (3399).

Ellen Cheyne was listed on the 1851 Scotland Census at Sclattie, in Newhills Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. She was a house servant in the household of William Reid. She was 19 and born in New Machar Parish, Aberdeen. Also in the household was a James Reid, stone mason, nephew of William Reid. He was the father of Helen Cheyne's daughter, Helen Reid, who would be born later in the year.5

Helen Lumsden Cheyne married William Brown Grant 26 February 1853, in Inverurie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. She married William Grant on 11th March 1853, Newhills and 26 February 1853, Inverurie. She was probably the mother of Isabella Grant. Isabella, according to the entry on the 1871 Newhills census, was born in 1853. All children starting with Alexander are on the IGI, born to Helen Cheyne and William Grant.6



Helen Grant and her husband, William B. Grant, were listed on the 1861 Scotland Census, at Drimsynie, in Lochgoilhead Parish, Argyll, Scotland. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their children were, Wilhelmina Grant, Hellina Grant, Isabella Grant, Alexander Grant, Henry Grant and Donald MacLaine Grant. She was an agricultural overseer's wife and indexed with the name, Hellen Channa Grant. She was 32 years of age and born in New Machar Parish.8

Helen L. C. Grant and her husband, William Brown Grant, were listed on the 1871 Scotland Census, at Mugiemoss, in Newhills Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their children were, Wilhelmina Grant, Isabella Grant, Donald MacLaine Grant, Mary Ann Grant, Margaret Mackie Grant, Elizabeth Grant, Christian Grant and Jessie Ann Grant. In addition, a lodger, Helen Reid, was also present.. She was listed as 39 years of age and born in New Machar Parish.9

Helen Lumsden Cheyne was listed as the wife of William Brown Grant, manager at paper mills on the 1881 Scotland Census, at Low Road Auchmull, in Newhills Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Also in the household were her children, Isabella Grant, Alexander Grant, Donald MacLaine Grant, Mary Ann Grant, Margaret Mackie Grant, Elizabeth Grant, Christian Grant, Jessie Ann Grant, Jane Grant and Agnes Grant. (an unknown value).10

Helen Grant was listed on the 1901 Scotland Census, at 31 Mugiemoss Road, in Newhills Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. She was head of household. She was formerly a paper mill worker and lived alone. She was listed as 68 years of age and born in New Machar Parish.11

Helen Grant died 1 April 1919 in Newhills Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.12
