     John Cheyne was born, 8 June 1860, at 5 AM, in Mill of Kelly, Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1

John Cheyne was listed as a grandson in the household of Ann Porter on the 1861 Scotland Census at Mill of Kelly, in Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Also present was his unmarried mother, Susan Luias (3218). He was ten months old and born in Methlick Parish.2

John Cheyne, William Cheyne, Charles Cheyne, Mary Ann Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne were listed as children in the household of James Cheyne and his wife, Susan Cheyne on the 1871 Scotland Census, at Mill of Kelly, in Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was 10 years of age, born in Methlick Parish and a scholar.3

John Cheyne or John Cheyne was found listed on the 1881 Scotland Census in Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The 1881 British Census had two different entries for a John Cheyne that was born in Methlick Parish, Aberdeen, about 1862. There are two possible John Cheynes, (1325) and (3219). It is not known, for certain, which is the correct one for each census entry.
Most likely, John Cheyne (1325) was the one at Brownhill. He was listed as a farmer of 11 acres, unmarried, 18 years of age and born in Methlick Parish. Also present was a housekeeper, Margaret Marshall, 66.
And, most likely John Cheyne (3219) was in the household of Alexander Davidson, farmer of 130 acres at Cairnhill, Tarves Parish. He was listed as unmarried, 18 years of age, born in Methlick Parish and a farm servant.4,5

Charles was the illegitimate son of a John Cheyne, farm servant at Cairnhill, Tarves and Isabella Irvine, domestic servant Station Road, Ellon. Both recorded the birth in Methlick and Ellon Parishes. It is assumed that John Cheyne (3219) was the father. Both John and Charles immigrated to Canada and descendants of John have stated that John had an illegitimate son named Charles, born about 1884. This Charles was the only Charles Cheyne born in rural Aberdeenshire 1882-1886 (ScotlandsPeople).6,7,8

John Cheyne married Sophia Anderson 8 June 1884, in Belhelvie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.9,10

John Cheyne, farm servant in Darrahill, Belhelvie, was listed on a birth record as the father of James Cheyne, 24 October 1885, Craigie of Shethin, Tarves Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 5:30 PM.11,12

John Cheyne and his wife Sophia Cheyne were listed on the 1901 Scotland Census, at Drums Cottage, in Foveran Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was head of household and a cattleman. Also present were his children, Mary Bella Cheyne, John Gordon Cheyne, William Cheyne, Sophia Cheyne and Edward Cheyne. Also present were, her granddaughter, Sophia McDonald Melvin, and mother, Ann Anderson.. John was 40 years of age and born in Methlick Parish, Aberdeen.9

He was listed on a 1912 passenger list has having been living in Canada for seven years.13,14

James Cheyne (19008) may have been he grandson of John Cheyne and Sophia Anderson.14

John Cheyne and Sophia Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 8 June 1912, at Quebec, Quebec, Canada. Also present were their children Mary Cheyne, William Cheyne, Sophia Cheyne, Edward Cheyne, Annie Cheyne and James Cheyne. They were steerage passengers aboard the Empress of Ireland out of Liverpool. John was listed as 50 years of age and had previously been in Canada for seven years and had been a farmer for thirty years. Sophia was 50. All were born in Scotland of Scottish race and were Presbyterians. They were destined for North Battleford, Saskatchewan via the Canadian Pacific Railway.14

An unknown person was named the father and next of kin of Edward Cheyne, on his enlistment papers into the Canadian military, dated 26 April 1916. His address was Patch Grove, Saskatchewan.13

An unknown person was named the father and next of kin of William Cheyne, on his enlistment papers into the Canadian military, dated 1 July 1916. He resided in Patch Grove, Saskatchewan.13

An unknown person was named the father and next of kin of John Gordon Cheyne, on his enlistment papers into the Canadian military, dated 22 December 1918. His address was Patch Grove, Saskatchewan.13

John Cheyne was buried circa 1930 in Livelong, Saskatchewan, Canada.15
