James Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne, Mary Cheyne, Robert Duguid Cheyne and Christian Cheyne were listed as children in the household of James Cheyne and his wife, Christian Cheyne on the 1861 Scotland Census, at Cowgate, in Old Meldrum Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was 10 years of age, born in Udny Parish and a scholar.3

James Cheyne was listed on the 1871 Scotland Census at Perth and Creiff Road, in Methven Parish, Perth, Scotland. He was a nephew in the household of James Mitchell, tailor. He was 19 years of age, born in Udny, Aberdeen, and employed as a forester.4

James Cheyne married Caroline (?) about 1881. They were listed on the 1911 Wales Census as having been married for thirty years.5,2

James Cheyne was listed on a birth record as the father of James William Cheyne, 1881, Oldcastle, County Meath, Ireland.6

He was head of household and a woodman and sub-agent of an estate. Also present were his children, Christina R. Cheyne, Wilhelmina M. Cheyne, Jessie Cheyne, Alexander Cheyne, Grace Cheyne, Caroline Cheyne and Marjory Cheyne. He was listed as having been born in Scotland, no further details, and age 49.5

James Cheyne and his wife Caroline Cheyne were listed on the 1911 Wales Census, at The Lay, in Llyswen Parish, Berconshire, Wales. He was head of household and a estate foreman. Also present were his children, Alexander Cheyne, Grace Cheyne, Caroline Cheyne and Marjory Cheyne. They had been married for thirty years and she had had ten children, seven living and three had died.. He was listed as 59 years old having been born in Udny, Aberdeenshire.2

James Cheyne died 16 June 1929 at Cottage Hospital in Builth Wells, Powys, Wales.9

His estate was probated on 27 July 1929 at Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.10
