     James Auchinleck Cheyne was born, 16 April 1795, in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland.1,2

From A History of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet, page 38, "Cheyne, James Auchinleck, of Oxendean and Kilmaron. 3d March 1818. Apprentice to (1) Robert Cathcart; and (2) John Kermack. Son of Ninian Richard Cheyne, Bookseller in Edinburgh. Died 21st June 1853, aged 58. Mar. (1) 16th August 1821, Margaret Blair, daughter of Andrew McKean, Edinburgh; and (2) 29th April 1834, Frances Charlton, daughter of James Sprott, of Chittagong, Bengal".3

James Auchinleck Cheyne was served heir to his mother Jean Auchinleck. The entry in Services of Heirs in Scotland, reads: "Cheyne, James Auchinleck, W.S., to his Mother Jean Auchinleck, Wife of Ninian Richard Cheyne, Bookseller, Edinburgh. -- Heir Genl. -- 23d Aug. 1819". It was recorded 21 Oct. 1819, the twenty-ninth entry of the month.4

James Auchinleck Cheyne married Margaret Blair McKean 16 August 1821, at Saint Peters Chapel, in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.5,3,6

James Auchinleck Cheyne was served heir to his aunt Elizabeth Auchinleck. The entry in Services of Heirs in Scotland, reads: "Cheyne, James Auchinleck, W.S., Accountant, Edinburgh, to his Aunt Elizabeth Auchinleck, Daur of J. Auchinleck of Woodcockdale. -- Heir Port. Genl. -- 26th Oct. 1829." It was recorded 6 Nov. 1829, the seventeenth entry of the month.7

James Auchinleck Cheyne married Frances Charlton Sprot 29 April 1834, in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland.8,3

James A. Cheyne and his wife Frances C. Cheyne were listed on the 1851 Scotland Census, at Kilchearean, in Lismore and Appin Parish, Argyll, Scotland. He was head of household and a landowner and Justice of the Peace in Berwickshire. Also present was his son, James A. Cheyne. Also present were three servants, a house servant, a cook and a footman.9

James Auchinleck Cheyne died 21 June 1853 in Lismore, Argyll, Scotland.10,11

James Auchinleck Cheyne (4053) was served heir to his father James Auchinleck Cheyne (2770). The entry in Services of Heirs in Scotland, reads: "Cheyne, James Auchinleck, Dunedin, New Zealand, to his Father James Auchinleck of Kilmoron, who died 21st June 1853. -- Heir Special, in Kilcheren, etc. - Argyllshire, and Houses, etc. in Edinburgh. -- dated 7th November 1854." It was recorded 20 Nov. 1854, the fifty-second entry of the month.12
