John Cheyne, Surgeon and Burgess and Guild Brother of the City of Edinburgh was the patron of Thomas McDonald, surgeon, whose abstracted entry in the Roll of Burgesses reads: "M'Donnell, Thomas, surgeon, B. and G., as p. to John Cheyne, surgeon, B. and G. (entered p. 22 Mar 1769 ). (Margin, M'Donald), 22 Mar 1769".16
