John Cheyne, William Cheyne, Arthur Cheyne, Henry Cheyne, Joseph G. Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Henry Cheyne and his wife, Barbara Cheyne on the 1851 Scotland Census, at 6 Royal Terrace, in Leith, Leith South, Midlothian, Scotland. He was a scholar.8

Harry Cheyne, Arthur Cheyne, Joseph G. C. Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne and Anne Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Henry Cheyne and his wife, Barbara Cheyne on the 1861 Scotland Census, at 6 Royal Terrace, in Leith, Leith South, Midlothian, Scotland. He was a student.9

John Cheyne, Harry Cheyne, Joseph Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne and Annie Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Barbara Cheyne on the 1871 Scotland Census, at 12 Alban Street, in Edinburgh, Saint Marys Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was listed as 26 years of age, born in Edinburgh and a Writer to the Signet.10

From A History of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet, page 38, "Cheyne, Harry, of Girlesta. Apprentice to, and son of, Henry Cheyne, W.S.. Born 2d March 1845. Mar. 20th July 1876, Dora, daughter of George Todd Chiene, C.A., Edinburgh". That same citation was given in The Cheyne Family in Scotland, A. Y. Cheyne, page 112.11

Henry Cheyne married Dorothy Cooper Cheyne 20 July 1876.12,5

Harry Cheyne and his wife Dorothy Cooper Cheyne were listed on the 1881 Scotland Census, at 13 Rutland Street, in Edinburgh, Saint Cuthberts Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was head of household and a Writer to the Signet. Also present was his child, Dora Cheyne. Also present were three household servants.13

Harry and Dora were mentioned in Zetland Family Histories. Their entry reads "Harry (Cheyne) of Girlsta, born 2nd March, 1845, admitted Writer to the Signet, 1868, married, 20th July, 1876, Dora daughter of George Todd Cheine, C.A., Edinburgh, and has issue, Harry ... and Dora ...".5

The attached portriat entitled Henry Cheyne probably is of Sir Henry.14

Harry Cheyne and his wife Dora Cheyne were listed on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 13 Rutland Street, in Edinburgh, Saint Cuthberts Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was head of household and a writer to the signet. Also present were his children, Dora Cheyne and Harry Cheyne. Also present were three domectic servants. Harry was listed as 46 years of age and born in Edinburgh.4

London, England © Crown copyright, for Barbara Todd Chiene reads: "Todd or Chiene Barbara of 21 Manor Place, Edinburgh, died 25 January 1892. Confirmation of John Chiene, professor of surgery, University of Edinburgh, George Todd Chiene, charted accountant and Harry Chiene, writer to the signet. Sealed London 2 July."15

John Cheyne, Mary Todd Cheyne and Harry Cheyne was granted the probate of the estate of the deceased, George Todd Chiene, 29 December 1900. The will of George Todd Chiene was proved 29 December 1900. An abstract of it reads: "Chiene George Todd of 19 Palmerston Place Edinburgh died 5 September 1900 at Lundin links Largo Fifeshire Confirmation of John Chiene M.D. Mary Todd Chiene Harry Cheyne writer to the signet and George Todd bank agent. Sealed London 29 December.".16

Harry Cheyne and his wife Dora Cheyne were listed on the 1901 Scotland Census, at 4 Moray Place, in Edinburgh, Saint George Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was head of household and a Writer to the Signet. Also present were his children, Dora Cheyne and Harry Cheyne. He was listed as 66 years of age and born in Edinburgh.17

Cheyne, The Cheyne Family of Scotland, page 112, refering to Sir John Cheyne, 10th of Tangwick (2554): "With him the line of Tangwick passed to his brother, Sir Harry Cheyne (2557), whose son Harry (2563) left only a posthumous daughter, thus apparently diverting the present day male representation of Cheyne of Inveruguie, Straloch, Essilmont and, Arnage to the line of Cheyne in Edinburgh". Mary Isabella Cheyne, Sir Henry Cheyne of Girlsta and Joseph Gordon Clunies Cheyne was granted the probate of the estate of the deceased, Sir John Cheyne K.C., LL.D., 10th of Tangwick, 13 March 1907. The will of Sir John Cheyne K.C., LL.D., 10th of Tangwick was proved 13 March 1907. An abstract of it reads: "Cheyne sir John of 13 Chester Street Edinburgh K.C. L.L.D. died 15 January 1907 at Edinburgh Confirmation of dame Mary Isabella Cheyne widow Harry Cheyne writer to the signet and Joseph Gordon Clunes Cheyne secretary. Sealed London 13 March"..18

Harry Cheyne was named the father and closest relative of Harry Cheyne on a passenger list dated 26 December 1908. He resided at 4 Moray Place, Edinburgh.19

Harry Cheyne was granted the probate of the estate of the deceased, Frances Ellen Georina Cheyne, 18 April 1912. The will of Frances Ellen Georina Cheyne was proved 18 April 1912. An abstract of it reads: Cheyne Frances Ellen Georgina of Harpsden Cottage Forest Road Branksome Park Dorsetshire widow died 26 February 1912 Probate London 18 April to Harry Cheyne W.S. Effects £3753 14s. 3d."..20

Sir Henry Cheyne of Girlsta died 27 November 1915 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.21,22

His estate was probated on 23 February 1916 at London, England.23

An entry in Calendar of Confirmations and Inventories, 1917, reads as follows: Cheyne, Harry, W.S., 9 Hill Street, and late of 4 Moray Place, Edinburgh, died 27 November 1915, at Edinburgh, testate. Eik to Confirmation granted at Edinburgh, 6 January, to Dora Cheyne, 4 Moray Place, Edinburgh, his widow, and Harry Cheyne, his son, and Ian MacIntyre, both Writers to the Signet, 9 Hill Street there, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 22 November 1915, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Edinburgh, 2 February 1916. Value of Additional Estate £681, 16s. 6d. Original Confirmation granted 3 February 1916". Also a hand written entry followed: "Second Eik granted 5 June 1922".24

Harry Cheyne, residing in Edinburgh, were named the parents of Harry Cheyne, who died in action on 10 July 1917, and was buried at Dickebusch New Military Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium; during World War I.3,25,26,27,28
