John Cheyne married Mary Isabella Edward 10 June 1875, in Inchture Parish, Perth, Scotland. There was a marriage record of a John Cheyne and Mary J. Edward in Inchture Parish, Perth, dated 10 June 1875. It was probably he.1,13,12

John Cheyne and his wife Mary Cheyne were listed on the 1881 Scotland Census, at 7 Airlie Place, in Dundee, Dundee Parish, Forfar, Angus, Scotland. He was head of household and a Advocate Sheriff Substitute Forfarshire M.A. Oxon. Also present were his children, Maria Helen Cheyne and Margaret Frances Cheyne. Also present were three domestic servants. He was 40 years of age and born in Edinburgh.14

John Cheyne and his wife Mary Isabella Cheyne were listed on the 1891 Scotland Census, at 13 Chester Street, in Edinburgh, Saint Cuthberts Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was head of household and a Advocate Practicing Sheriff of Renfrew & Bute. Also present were his children, Maria Helen Cheyne and Margaret Frances Cheyne. He was listed as 50 years of age and born in Edinburgh.15

Sir John Cheyne and Lady Cheyne were listed on the 1901 Scotland Census at The Grange, in North Berwick Parish, East Lothian, Scotland. They were visitors in the household of John Trayner, Lord of Council Session. He was 60 years of age, born in Edinburgh and an advocate. She was 54 years of age and born in Dundee.16

John was mentioned in Zetland Family Histories. His entry reads "Sir John Cheyne, of Tangwick, born 15th February, 1841, was admitted advocate, 30th May 1865, appointed Sheriff-Substitute of Forfarshire at Dundee, 1870, Sheriff of Roxburgh, Berwick, and Selkirk, 1885, and Ross, Cromarty, and Sutherland, 1886, and of Renfrew and Bute, 1889, Procurator of the Church of Scotland, May, 1891, and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, June, 1892, retired 1905, knighted at Balmoral, 7th October, 1897, and died 15th January, 1907, married first 20th March, 1871, Margaret, daughter of Archibald Simson of Commedpore, Bengal... and had issue, Maria Helen. He married second June 1875,Mary, eldest daughter of James Edward of Balruddery, and had issue, Margaret Frances".17

Cheyne, The Cheyne Family of Scotland, page 112, refering to Sir John Cheyne, 10th of Tangwick (2554): "With him the line of Tangwick passed to his brother, Sir Harry Cheyne (2557), whose son Harry (2563) left only a posthumous daughter, thus apparently diverting the present day male representation of Cheyne of Inveruguie, Straloch, Essilmont and, Arnage to the line of Cheyne in Edinburgh". Sir John Cheyne K.C., LL.D., 10th of Tangwick died 15 January 1907 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.17,18

His estate was probated on 13 March 1907 at London, England.19
