     Henry Cheyne 9th of Tangwick, Writer to the Signet was born, 24 August 1804, in Northmavine Parish, Shetland Islands, Scotland. His place of birth, as given on the 1851 census, was Zether Parish, Orkney.1,2,3

Henry Cheyne 9th of Tangwick, Writer to the Signet was baptized, 29 August 1804, in Northmavine Parish, Shetland Islands, Scotland.4

From A History of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet "Cheyne, Henry. Apprentice to Joseph Gordon. Eldest son of John Cheyne of Tangwick, Shetland. Born 24th August 1804. Died 27th 1868. Mar. 7th May 1840, Barbara, daughter of William Hay of Laxfirth, Shetland. Clerk to the Admission of Notaries, 1855-68".6

Henry Cheyne 9th of Tangwick, Writer to the Signet married Barbara Hay 7 May 1840, in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. Henry Cheyne and Barbara Hay were married in Edinburgh and in Lerwick Parish the same day.7,8,2

Henry Cheyne was listed on the 1841 Scotland Census, at Morningside, in Edinburgh, Saint Cuthberts Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. He was head of household and a Writer to the Signet. Also in the household were Barbara Cheyne and John Cheyne. He was 35 years of age and born in Scotland (not Midlothian).9

Henry Cheyne and his wife Barbara Cheyne were listed on the 1851 Scotland Census, at 6 Royal Terrace, in Leith, Leith South, Midlothian, Scotland. He was head of household and a Writer to the Signet. Also present were his children, John Cheyne, William Cheyne, Arthur Cheyne, Henry Cheyne, Joseph G. Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne. In addition, Mary C. Hay, probably his wife's sister, and six domestic servants were also present.10

He was found on four entries in the Edinburgh, Scotland Almanac, 1853.
In Part 4, on the Ecclesiastical Lists, he was a director of the Society for Propagating Christian knowledge.
In Part 5, he was on the Certificated Writers to the Signet, &c. as Cheyne, Henry, W.S.'(Messrs Gordon, Stuart and Cheyne)', 5 Royal Terrace, Edinburgh. The Gordon was Joseph Gordon, W.S. That Joseph Gordon was probably his patron in his apprenticeship as a Writer to the Signet.
Also in Part 5, on a list of medical charities, he was listed as Henry Cheyne, W.S., a director of the Orkney and Shetland Charitable Society.
In the advertizing section, Henry Cheyne, Esq., W.S., was shown as an ordinary director of the Scottish Widows' Fund, a mutual life assurance company.11

Henry Cheyne and his wife Barbara Cheyne were listed on the 1861 Scotland Census, at 6 Royal Terrace, in Leith, Leith South, Midlothian, Scotland. He was head of household and a Writer to the Signet. Also present were his children, Harry Cheyne, Arthur Cheyne, Joseph G. C. Cheyne, Margaret Cheyne and Anne Cheyne. Also present were four household servants.12

Harry and Barbara were mentioned in Zetland Family Histories. Their entry reads "Harry Cheyne of Tangwick, born 24th August, 1804, went to Edinburg, and was admitted a Writer to the Signet in 1829. He died 27th February, 1868, married on 7th May, 1840, Barbara, eldest daughter of William Hay of Laxfirth, and had issue; John, his heir; William; Arthur, Harry of Girlsta; Joseph Gordon Clunes; Margaret; and, Ann".2

Henry Cheyne 9th of Tangwick, Writer to the Signet died 27 February 1868.1,13,2

Henry Cheyne, gentleman, was listed as the father of the groom on the marriage record of Arthur Cheyne and Frances Ellen Georina Gordon, 28 June 1883; Church of England.8,2,14
