In 1581, he was cited as an advocate in Edinburgh.2

Alexander Cheyne (2269) was mentioned in an action in Littlejohn, Records of the Sheriff Court of Aberdeenshire. The entry for the said action reads as follows: "Novr. 18 (1608). Loosing of Arrestments. Mr. Alexr. Cheyne in Auld Abd. v. John Mylne in Chapeltoune. Cheyne, alleging himself to be legator of the late Dame Helenor Bruce, Lady Essilmont, claimed teind victuall from Mylne. Cautioner Arthur Pantoune in Allathein".3
