About 1695. Margaret Cheyne (9558) was the assumed daughter of James Cheyne in Belhelvie (2137). He was married at the time of the 1696 poll.
Two James Cheynes were found on the same page of the List of Pollable Persons in Aberdeenshire 1696 at Mains of Meny, Belhelvie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. They probably were father and son.
The first was James Cheyne, cottar to James Raitt in Mains of Meny, who was a tennent to Alexander Kerr of Meney. The entry reads in part as follows: "MAINS OF MENY. James Raitt, tennent ther .... Item, James Chyn and Andrew Duncan, cottars, and ther wives, of poll ... £1 4s 0d".
The second was James Cheyne, servant to Alexander England, who was a tennent to Alexander Kerr of Meney. The entry reads in part as follows: "COWHILL. Alexander England, tennent ther .... James Chyn, servant, of fee £1 fortieth part and generall poll ... 12s 0d".1
William Cheyne (2136), James Chyn (2137) and James Chyn (2138), all found on the 1696 Poll in Belhelvie Parish were probably related.
James Cheyne was named as a cautioner for the bride in the marriage banns of Margaret Cheyne and John Davidson on 11 April 1719 at Belhelvie Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was probably her father; Church of Scotland.2
