Margaret Cheyne, William Cheyne and Margaret Cheyne were listed as in the household of William Cheyne on the 1841 Scotland Census, at South Street, in Strichen, Strichen Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. She was his daughter, 2 years old and born in Aberdeenshire.3

William Chyne, Margaret Chyne, Alexander Chyne and Elisabeth Chyne were listed as children in the household of William Chyne on the 1851 Scotland Census, at South Street, in Strichen, Strichen Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. She was 12 years old, born in Strichen Parish and at home.4

Margaret Cheyne recorded the death of her brother, William Cheyne, on 24 July 1859, at Mid Street, Strichen, Strichen Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 7:30 PM, of scrofula phthisis.5

Margaret Cheyne was listed on the 1861 Scotland Census at Bridge Street, in Strichen, Strichen Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Margaret was in the household of Charles Chalmers, general merchant. She was listed as unmarried, 21 years of age, a domestic servant and born in Strichen Parish, Aberdeen.6

Margaret Cheyne married James Cheyne 27 November 1864, in accordance with the procedures of the Established Church of Scotland, at Old Parish Manse, in Fraserburgh, Fraserburgh Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. Margaret resided in St. Andrew's Parish, Edinburgh before the marriage. She was listed as 26 and a domestic servant. Both sets of parents were confirmed by the marriage record.7

Margaret Cheyne and her husband, James Cheyne, were listed on the 1871 Scotland Census, at 36 Fish Cross Street, in Fraserburgh, Fraserburgh Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their children were, Isabella Cheyne, Jessie Cheyne and Alexander Cheyne. Her sister, Elizabeth Cheyne, was also present.. She was 32 and born in Strichen Parish.8

Margaret Cheyne was listed on a birth record as the mother of John Park Cheyne, 28 March 1872, Fish Cross Street, Fraserburgh, Fraserburgh Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 06:00 AM.9

The attached is a studio photo taken in Oldmeldrum. On the back is written "Greatgranma Cheyne". This photo was given to me by my grandmother about 1952. I don't know if it was my great grandmother or my father's. He had two great grandmother Cheynes, Magdalene Birnie and Margaret Murray. Margaret died in 1848, so it is not likely to have been her. Magdalene Birnie lived until 1885. If it was of my great grandmother it would have been Margaret Cheyne, but another photo of her (taken abut 1870) shows a person of a different likeness. I believe that the photo probably was of Magdalene Birnie taken about 1880.

Margaret Cheyne and her husband, James Cheyne, were listed on the 1881 Scotland Census, at 42 Cross Street, in Fraserburgh, Fraserburgh Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their children were, William Cheyne, Betsy Cheyne, Jessie Cheyne, Alexander Cheyne, John Park Cheyne, George Cheyne and Robert Cheyne. In addition, their granddaughter, Barbara Davidson, was also present.. She was 43 years of age and born in Strichen Parish.10

Margaret Cheyne and her husband, James Cheyne, were listed on the 1891 Scotland Census, at Dalrymple Cafe, in Fraserburgh, Fraserburgh Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. They were listed as the head of household and wife. Also present listed as their children were, Jessie Cheyne, George Cheyne, Robert Cheyne and Margaret Ann Cheyne. She was 52 years of age and born in Strichen Parish.11

Margaret Cheyne was listed as the mother of the bride on the marriage record of Jessie Cheyne and William Morrison, who were married, 1 March 1893; Baptist Church.12

Margaret Cheyne was listed as the mother of the groom on the marriage record of Alexander Cheyne and Jessie McDonald, who were married, 8 October 1895; Free Church of Scotland.13,14

On 19 October 1896. An article entitled "Come to the Ball", written by Vivienne Forrest, was published in Highlander magazine, that featured Dalrymple Hall, also known as "The Cafe", in Fraserurgh, called "The Broch" and its operators, Mr. and Mrs. Cheyne and their daughter, Miss Cheyne. They were James (13), Margaret (19), and Margaret Ann (22) Cheynes.15

Margaret Cheyne was listed on the 1901 Scotland Census, at Dalrymple Cafe, in Fraserburgh, Fraserburgh Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. She was head of household and a leasee of cafe. Also present was her daughter, Margaret A. Cheyne. Also present were five lodgers and a domestic servant. Her daughter, Jessie and her husband were also at the cafe. He was the caretaker. Margaret was listed as a widow, 62 years of age and born in Strichen Parish.16

Margaret Cheyne was listed as the mother of the bride on the marriage record of Margaret Ann Cheyne and Rose Currie Ritchie, who were married, 15 April 1903; Established Church of Scotland, after Banns.17

Margaret Cheyne was listed on the death record as the mother of the deceased John Park Cheyne who died 12 February 1917; at 12 midnight, of pulmonary tuberculous.18

According to the 1935 letter; she may have had a brother Robert; and her grandfather's name was William. (Both were true).
