     James Cheyne was born, about 1886, in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland.1

Robert Cheyne, James Cheyne, George Cheyne and Nellie Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Robert Cheyne and his wife, Hellen Cheyne on the 1891 Scotland Census, at Rose Hall, in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was listed as 5 years of age, born in Drumoak Parish, and a scholar.1

James Cheyne was listed on the 1901 Scotland Census at Reidford Farmhouse, in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was a servant on the farm of William Taylor. He was listed as 15 years of age, born in Drumoak Parish, Aberdeen and a farm servant.2

James Cheyne died 21 April 1917 during World War I at 49 Field Ambulance in France. He was a Bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery, "B" Batttery, 255th Brigade, Service Number 631069. He was 31 years of age and the son of Robert and Isabella Cheyne, of South Culsh, New Deer, Maud, Aberdeenshire.3,4

James Cheyne was buried in grave II. B. 9, at the Anzin-St Aubin British Cemetery, near Arras, France.3

An entry in Calendar of Confirmations and Inventories, 1917, reads as follows: Cheyne, James, Cashier, Free Press Office, residing at 34 Crown Street, Aberdeen, Bombdr., B/255th Brigade, R.F.A., died 21 April 1917, at 49 Field Ambulance, France, testate. Confirmation granted at Aberdeen, 1 September, to Robert Cheyne, Farmer, South Culsh, Parish of New Deer, his father, Universal Legatory, and as such Executor nominate under Will or Deed, dated 5 October 1915, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Aberdeen, 4 September 1917. Value of Estate £120, 14s. 2d".5

His estate was probated on 12 September 1917 at London, England.6
