James Steele and his wife Grace Steele were listed on the 1900 United States Census, at 313 North Monroe Street, in Peoria, Peoria, Illinois, USA. He was head of household and a news editor. Also present were his children, Anna M. Steele, John C. Steele and Isabella Jane Steele. They had been married for seven years and she had three children all living and present. The lived in a rented home.. He was 36, born in Ireland, immigrated in 1881 and was now a naturalized citizen.2

James Steele married Mary Mackline Cheyne.4

James Steele and his wife Grace Cheyne were listed on the 1910 United States Census, at 506 College Street, in Peoria, Peoria, Illinois, USA. He was head of household and a government worker. Also present were his children, Anna Steele, John C. Steele and J. Isabella Steele. The family that lived next door was Charles Cheyne (13346), who was probably her brother.. He was listed as 47 years of age, born in Ireland, immigrated in 1892 and was a naturalized US citizen.1

His wife was a widow on the 1920 US Census.
