William Cheyne and his wife, Helen Black, and their son, James were found at Badichell, Fyvie Parish in the List of Pollable Persons in Aberdeenshire 1696. He was a yeoman tennant of the Laird of Meldrum. There was much witnessing of baptisms and marriages between him and his immediate neighbours. His entry reads as follows: "William Cheyn, in Badiechell, yeaman, tennent [no trade], his proportion of the valued rent is 2s 4d, which, with the generall poll ... 8s 0d.
"Helen Black, his spouse ... 6s 0d.
"James Cheyne, his son, under sixteen years of age, in familia, [not pollable] ... 0s 0d.

"James Petrie (4632), yeaman, tennent [no trade], his proportion of the valued rent effeirand to his duty, is 3s Scots, which, with the generall poll ... 9s 0d.
"Barbara Cassie (5042), his spouse ... 6s 0d.

Samuel Cheyne (1528) was listed on the List of Pollable Persons in Aberdeenshire 1696, at Cottoune, near Fadonhill, Fyvie Parish. He was living under Alexander Black, yeaman tenant of the laird of Gight. Alexander probably was related to Helen Black (1516), the wife of William Cheyne, who lived at Blackhillock and Bodiechell. The entry reads as follows: "Samuel Cheyn lives upon charity, to be proven ... 0s 0d".3
