     William Chene was born, 18 March 1861, in Ontario, Canada. [N.B.-It was originally thought that William was a Cheyne with his surname improperly entered on the census. He was the son of Thomas Chave, born England and Elizabeth unknown surname born in Scotland. They were found on the 1851 and 1871 Canada Censuses and William on the 1871, 1881 and 1891.]1,2

William Chene married Mary (?).1,2

William Chene and Mary Chave were found on a passenger list, dated 14 October 1897, at Liverpool, Lancashire, England. They were passengers aboard the Germanic, out of New York. He was 44 and a merchant; she was 33. Both were of English descent.3

William J. Chave and his wife Mary Chave were listed on the 1901 Canada Census, in Woodstock, Oxford, Ontario, Canada. He was head of household and a teacher. Also present were his children, Earnest J. Chave, Reginald C. Chave and Elmer H. Chave. All family members were Baptist and of English descent. Also present was a Louise H. Dain, 30, a nurse and a friend.. He was 40 years old and born in Ontario.2

William Chene and his wife Mary Chene were listed on the 1911 Canada Census, at Candul Street, in Saanich, Nanaimo District, British Columbia, Canada. He was head of household and a grocery merchant. Also present were his children, Earnest Chene, Reginald Chene and Elmore Chene. All family members were Baptists. Also in the household were three boarders and two domestic servants.1
