The attached is a photo taken about 1883 of Mary M. Cheyne.4

Mary M. Cheyne, Elizabeth D. Cheyne, Hans Arnold Cheyne and Charles Cheyne were listed as children in the household of Alexander Cheyne on the 1901 Ireland Census, at Fitzroy Street, in Cromac, County Antrim, Ireland. She was listed as not married, 28 years old, born in County Derry and a housekeeper.3

Mary Mackline Cheyne married James Steele. Mary married her sister Grace's husband James after Grace died. His children were in her household in 1920, where she was a widow.5

Mary Cheyne and Elizabeth Cheyne were found on a passenger list, dated 2 July 1910, at New York, New York, USA. Also present were their children S. Cheyne. They were passengers on the ship Celtic, on which they boarded in Liverpool on 2 July 1910 and landed on 2 July 1910. Mary was listed as 30 years of age and a domestic; Elizabeth, was 26 and a typist. All other entries were the same for both. They were born in Maghera, Ireland; last lived in Belfast; were destined for Peoria, Illinois, to the home of their sister, Mrs. Steele, at 506 College Street (Grace (15183) found on 1910 census at that address); their nearest relative in Ireland, was a brother, S. Cheyne (Samuel (12112)), in Belfast.6

Mary Steele was listed on the 1920 United States Census, at 1322 Main Street, in Peoria, Peoria, Illinois, USA. She was head of household and a widow with no occupation noted. Also present were her sister, Lillian D. Cheyne; and, two nephews John C. Steele. She rented their home. She and her parents were said to have been born in Ireland. She immigrated in 1910 and was a naturalized US citizen, but the date was lacking.5

Mary Steele was listed on the 1930 United States Census, at 1615 1/2 Main Street, in Peoria, Peoria, Illinois, USA. She was head of household and a widow with no occupation noted. Also present was her sister, Lillian D. Cheyne. She rented their home. She and her parents were said to have been born in Northern Ireland. She was a naturalized US citizen.7
