James Cheyne was baptized in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, 19 December 1718, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1668-1738, Page 189, "19 (Dec 1718) Alex'r Cheyn (1258) in P'head a fon bapt. James (1274), James Cow & W'm Cheyn (1259) witnefses".1

James Cheyne married Mary Farquhar 25 June 1741, in accordance with the procedures of the Church of Scotland, in Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Marriages, Parish of Peterhead, 1664-1764, Page 270, "June 25 (1741) James Cheyn & Mary Farquhar (1283)”. That James was probably James (1274). This James was placed here because the baptism of his daughter Mary, 6 Sep 1742, was witnessed by an Alexander Cheyn. That Alexander was probably the girl's grandfather, however, it may have been her uncle. Also, there was no certainty that the mother was Mary Farquhar, since mother's were not yet listed. But since the first born female was usually named after the mother it is quite likely.2

The baptismal record of Mary Cheyne documented James Cheyne as her father, 6 September 1742, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1739-1819, Page 14, "Septemb'r 6 (1742) James Cheyn (1274) in Peterhead had a daughter baptis'd & named Mary (1284); Rob't Miln & Alex'r Cheyn (1275) witnefses.”.3
