Cheyne was found in the household of John Cheyne and his wife, Jeannie Cheyne, and listed as their son on the 1901 Scotland Census at 200 Rosemount Place, in Aberdeen, Rosemount, Old Machar Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. He was listed as 9 years of age, born in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and a scholar.3
James Tulloch Cheyne was found on a passenger list, dated 6 May 1912, at Quebec, Quebec, Canada. He was aboard the Megantic, out of Liverpool on the 27th of April. He was 20 years old, a clerk, born in Scotland. He was destined for Winnipeg to join an unnamed friend and a Presbyterian.4,5
James Tulloch Cheyne, clerk, residing in Winnipeg, was named the son and person that John Cheyne and Jeannie Cheyne was coming to join on a passenger list on 18 May 1913.6
