Joseph L. Watson Cheyne was listed on the 1901 England Census at Font Hill, in East Grinstead, East Grinstead Parish, Sussex, England. He was a boarder at a boarding school run by Walter A. Radclifffe, schoolmaster. He was thirteen years of age and was born in London.5

Joseph Lister Watson Cheyne married Nelita Manfield Pringle 19 June 1912.3,6

He was educated at Fonthill, East Grinstead, Uppingham and Sandhurst. Joined the 16th Lancers in 1907. Served in the Great War 1914-1919, in France mentioned in Despatches; M.C., 1916, and bar, 1918; commanded 16th/5th Lancers, 1929-1935. He was a Major in 1921; Lieutenant Colonel, 1929; Colonel, 1933; A.A.G., Southern Command, 1933, and retired in 1937. He was Member of Parliament for Leagarth and Fetlar.3

Joseph Lister Cheyne and Grace Ella Margaret Watson Cheyne was granted the probate of the estate of the deceased, George Basil Watson Cheyne, 21 November 1922. The will of George Basil Watson Cheyne was proved 21 November 1922. An abstract of it reads: "Cheyne George Basil Watson of Leagarth Fetlar Scotland died 2 July 1922 at Leysin Switzerland Probate London 21 November to Joseph Lister Cheyne major 16th Lancers and Grace Ella Margaret Cheyne spinster. Effects £6198 11s. 5d."..8

He succeeded his father with the title of 2nd Baronet of Leagarth and Fetlar, in 1932.3

Joseph Lister Watson Cheyne and William Hunter Watson Cheyne was granted the probate of the estate of the deceased, William Watson Cheyne, 4 August 1932. The will of William Watson Cheyne was proved 4 August 1932. An abstract of which reads: "Cheyne sir William Watson baronet of Leagarth Fetlar Shetland N.B. died 19 April 1932 Probate London 4 August to sir Joseph Lister Cheyne baronet and William Hunter Watson Cheyne M.B. Effects £58594 13s. 7d. in England.".9
