The following is a transcription from the Register of Baptisms, Parish of Peterhead, 1833-1854, Page 247, "December 11th (1845) Thomas Cheyne (993), Seaman, in Peterhead & Agnes Milne (1003) his wife, had a son, born 3rd baptized and named James (1005), before James Milne (1001) & Thomas Cheyne (986)”.1

James Cheyne was listed on the 1851 British Census at Saint Peters Street, in Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. James Chyne was in the household of his uncle William Greig, wright. He was listed as 6 and born in Peterhead Parish.2

James Cheyne married Mary Soutter 21 December 1871, in accordance with the procedures of the Established Church of Scotland, at Lochside, in Cruden Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland. James Cheyne was listed on the marriage record as age twenty six years, a bachelor and butcher, residing at Farmer's Lane, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen. The marriage was officiated by William Leslie Low, Incumbent of Saint James's Episcopal Church of Scotland in Cruden Parish, Aberdeen. It was witnessed by John Youngson and John Ferguson. Five children of the couple were found. James was not present with his family on the 1881 census. They were residing at the time with Mary's mother in Cruden. His parents were confirmed to have been as herein recorded.6,7

James Cheyne, flesher, recorded the birth of his daughter, Mary Agnes Cheyne, on 13 March 1874, in 1 Union Street, Peterhead, Peterhead Parish, Aberdeen, Scotland; at 7:10 AM.9,10
