The baptism says he is the son of Abraham son of the late Josué Floteron and Marie Madelaine Floteron. This is likely an error; the other records of this couple give his father's name as Gabriel. However, the next baptism for this couple is for Marie Reyne, born 16 nov 1772 and baptised 22 nov 1772, and specifying Abraham as the son of the late Gabriel. It seems likely that the baptism of Pierre Fréderic is in error, he must be the son of a different couple.
He brought his family to the Red River Colony in Canada about 1822. The records of that colony show he was born about 1781, and that he had a wife Madelaine born about 1786, and children Sophie b. 1806, Louis Ferdinand b. 1808, Eugenie b. 1812, Olympe b. 1814, François b. 1815, and Louis b. 1820. Most of these are found in the church records of St. Imier, but the baptismal record for the last child we found there, Gustave, born 04 aug 1816, states that Sigismond and his wife were married "civilement" at St. Imier 15 apr 1803. At that period, St. Imier was part of the area that had been turned into the French département of Mont-Terrible, and so civil registration in the French manner was the order of the day. Hence, it is likely that a number of baptisms, deaths, and marriages were not recorded by the churches.
The last of his children baptised at St. Imier was Constant, 12 jul 1819. The family might have moved to a different parish — or even to another country in Europe, such as the Netherlands, in preparation for their voyage to the Canada.
His own baptism is problematic. The date and the parentage are clearly legible, but there is also a baptism for Lydie, daughter of the same parents, born less than two months earlier! There is limited evidence that at least some baptisms were recorded first in another register and then copied into the one that has survived, so possibly the year listed in that register for Sigismond is incorrect and the age he gave for the Red River colony is the correct one!
