Information from pedigree of Margaret Tobias of Somerville, NJ, as published in Central NY Genealogical Society, 6 Generation Ancestor Tables, vol. 2, pp. 2-43. Birthdate seems a few years too late, more census information is needed. 1850 census has spelling McDudle, in Volney, Oswego Co., but earlier and later readings in that county are McDougal.
Daniel and Catherine appear in the communicants list of 1830 and the family
listing of about the same date at the South Argyle Presbyterian Church. That
listing is the basis for assigning the children of this couple. However, in
a deed recorded 11 nov 1825, Daniel appears without a wife, raising the
possibility he had another wife prior to Catherine, and that Catherine was
not the mother of his children. Also, the names of the daughters may not be
correct. Membership and marriage records of the Argyle United Presbyterian Church associate a Martha J. McDougall with John B. McDougall. This Martha joined the church at the same time as John B. and his wife, then married Joseph T. Hall 20 jan 1853,
attested by John B. McDougall. John B. was first believed to belong to Daniel J., but is now known to belong to Alexander J., who died in 1850.
In addition to several children identified from cemetery records as belonging to Daniel and Catherine, another 5 are added from records of Berneice Frields, "Bain Family of the Hudson Valley, 1700-1900". These children are largely from bible and
family records of Mrs. Muriel Peterson of Chautaqua Co., NY, not otherwise identified.
Information from "service record" and family notes, posted on Washington Co., NY GenWeb site by Bonnie Boyd ([email protected]). Transcribed cemetery record shows death date as 1899, but family records give 1900. Served in Co. A, 138th NY Infantry, which mustered in at Auburn, NY, 1862, and reorganized to 9th NY Heavy Artillery shortly thereafter. (Pension cert. 295,089 April 28, 1879, and widow's pension 505,661 June 6, 1900.) Service record index gives his rank as Musician.

Argyle cemetery index, checked by Washington Co. Historian, shows a David McDougall d. 2 feb 1837. Actual record needs to be checked to be sure this is the correct David.

Listing from Washington Co. historian (from Lorrie Wallace) has date of death as 18 mar 1892. Check of 1880 soundex would determine which date is correct.
In Ft. Edward 1835 census, there is a Dougal McDougall apparently over 45 with wife under 45 and 1 daughter under 16. No corresponding entry has been found in earlier or later censuses.
A deed from Dougall and Polly McDougall to James McFarland (vol. L, p. 17) dated 23 sep 1808 involves this couple. There is considerable doubt about this family. The birthdates of the children are so spread out that we are inclined to think more than one family has been combined here. Dougal's portion of Lot 75, the southern third, was divided as follows: 100 acres to James McFarland 23 sep 1808, 41.67 acres to Thomas Martin 26 apr 1810, remainder of 25.71 acres to Samuel Rea, deed not located, but evidently purchased before 26 apr 1810. However, the same 25 acres were sold 07 feb 1823 by James W. Gillis and Archibald J. Gilchrist, administrators of the estate of Samuel Rea, to James Flack, the highest bidder (vol. S, p. 206, 1823, the parcel described as follows: Beginning at the south west corner of said farm lot number seventy five and running thence on the west line of said lot so far north as that a line drawn therefrom and running parralel with the south line of said lot until it strikes the west line of a piece of land formerly owned by James McFarland shall make twenty five acres).
Will dated 07 oct 1774, probated 05 apr 1791. Children petitioned for settlement of the estate on 11 jun 1789. Lists of the Argyle settlers show he arrived in 1739 with wife Janet Calder, and children John, Alexander, Ronald, Dugald, and Margaret. He is still listed with 5 children in 1764. The list of about 1763 claims "six" children, but lists them as "three sons and two daughters", so the total was most likely only 5. By 1763, two sons and a daughter had married, and the married daughter was already widowed with 4 children, however her name has not surfaced.
Duncan was the owner of Lot 75 (farm and town lots), originally totalling 500 acres.
The will of Duncan McDougall, dated 07 oct 1774 (Will book I, 43-45) resulted in division of his farm lot 75 into 3 parts: the northern part, 150 acres, to his eldest son Alexander, the middle third, 150 acres, to Ronald (Ronald also received town lot 75 of 50 acres, which we have not yet followed further) , and the southern third, 150 acres, to Dougall. These divisions are noted in later deeds. No widow is mentioned, so Janet must have died before the will was drawn up in 1774. Thus the will divided the farm Lot 75 among the surviving sons. Duncan's daughters, Nancy, Peggy, and Jenny, had already received "their full part" out of Duncan's effects. Duncan further made provisions that his sons should support him during the remainder of his life, and the executors were to be his sons Alexander and Ronald. The will was proved 25 apr 1791, with Ronald designated the Executor.
