Living at Le Plan, 1625. This may indicate that the later Antoine Dutoit living at Le Plan in the 1650's is his son or close relative. The settlement at Le Plan today consists of only a few buildings, and it has probably never been much larger. It is likely that he had several more children whose baptisms are not clearly identified.

Not Jean Dutoit the conseiller who married Marie Fudri, because that man survived at least until 1677. He is also the Jean Dutoit who, with his brother Philippe, made a settlement with Claudine Mauron, widow of their brother Daniel, 07 may 1642 (Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon).

The realization that he lived at Le Plan helps make sense of another set of records, although not without realizing that we are missing some baptisms. The present Jean Dutoit is known mainly from transactions among his children regarding their inheritance. However, not all of the children that seem to be his are mentioned in the later records.

Records concerning the children of Jean follow:

Father: Claude DUTOIT (b. bef 1518, d. BEF 1559)

His existence is inferred from several mentions in the 1590's of "Jean son of Claude Dutoit". A Jean son of the late Claude Dutoit in the terrier ACV Fn 347, fol. 91, who had inherited property previously in the hands of Claude and Nicod Dutoit from their wives Anthoine and Franoise Veyre, might be this one.

  3. +Jean DUTOIT (b. ABT 1620, d. BEF 1685)
  4. +Daniel DUTOIT (b. ABT 1625, d. BEF 1688)

Named in testament of the minister Pierre Dutoit 29 nov 1639, B. Girardet, notary, as the son of the minister's brother Moyse.

So far, virtually all of the Dutoits in the parish records at Lucens appear to be descendants of this family, in spite of the presence in the records of Moudon of many other Dutoits with many of the same related names such as Chevaley, Frossard, Pichonnet, de Palzieux dit Falconnier, etc. The Lucens records start in 1639 (with a very few marriages from about 1630 preserved at Granges), and the Dutoits who first appear in the Lucens records do not seem to be recorded at Moudon.

However, one common link is the presence of a Jean Dutoit and wife Benoicte. It appears that Jean Dutoit of Chesalles married first Jeanne Maquelin, then, before 1640, Benoicte, who survived him. It is not known which children belong to which mother, due to the absence of early records.

Several records of Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, mention that Jean had a brother Pierre (e.g., 27 jun 1654, after the death of Jean).

Now, there is a certain level of confusion about Jean Dutoit "couturier". The baptism in 1617 of Jaquemaz daughter of Jean Dutoit couturier tells us that this Jean was an adult as of that date. (This baptism leads us to the conclusion that there must have been an earlier wife as well. Likewise, there is a mention in 1621 of Benoicte, daughter of Jean Dutoit couturier, implying that he must have been married as early as 1605. He would thus have to be the first child of Moyse Dutoit and Sara Becholley, if those are indeed his parents, thus a good reason why he would be named as an heir in the testament of his uncle Pierre in 1639.) But much later, in 1645, there is mention of Jean Dutoit, couturier, son of Jaques Dutoit, and the Jaques in question is definitely the couturier who lived in Vevey from about 1603. In all probability, we are dealing with two Jean Dutoits who shared the same trade. The elder Jean might have been the uncle of the younger Jean. It is therefore possible that the appearance of two marriages for the elder Jean is the result of confusion, and that the man who married Benoicte was the younger of the two.

Another dimension of the confusion is that Jean Dutoit couturier is referred to as "of Chavannes" in 1617, but his later children, if we have correctly identified him, seem to be associated with Chesalles.

There is a notation in the baptismal registers of Moudon, 23 aug 1629, that one of the sponsors was "Benoiste fille de feu M. Jean DuToict". Taking this at face value, which is perhaps not warranted, we have to conclude that the first Jean Dutoit couturier died about 1629, and that a later Jean married Benoicte (surname still unknown). However, we know that Jean son of Moyse actually survived until at least 1639, as he is named in his uncle Pierre's testament! The only possible conclusion appears to be that Jean the earlier couturier, and father of Benoicte, was not the same man as Jean son of Moyse, whose occupation is still unknown! However, in light of the fact that his uncle Pierre Dutoit the minister gave him special mention, it seems likely that he is the Johannes De Tecto, Meldunensis, who was enrolled at the Acadmie de Lausanne in July, 1610. If so, he was probably about 14 years old at the time, and his baptism should have been recorded about 1596.

The identity of the earlier Jean Dutoit couturier is finally settled by a document of Antoine Richard, notary at Moudon, 09 apr 1610 (ACV DL 80), in which Jean Dutoit son of the late Claude, couturier, with his wife Claudine Sauvageat, sells property to Jaques Dutoit son of the late Guillaume, tisserand, and witnessed by Elie Dutoit, known also to be a son of the late Claude.

While it is clear that the sons of Moyse Dutoit are associated with Chesalles-sur-Moudon, there is also a "lettre de bourgeoisie" dated 20 oct 1560 for Claude Dutoit of Chavannes at Chesalles (Archives de Chesalles-sur-Moudon, P 7). It is not yet clear who he was, nor whether any of his descendants retained their connection with Chesalles.

  2.  Benoicte DUTOIT (bp. 27 JUN 1624)
  3.  Pierre DUTOIT (bp. 20 SEP 1626)

The Jean Dutoit who was at Bressonaz in the 1620's was a weaver ("tisserand") and son of Antoine. The only plausible baptism seems to be the one in 1597, son of Antoine Dutoit tisserand of Moudon, of whom almost nothing is known. Baptisms for three of Jean's children can be identified, and he is mentioned 28 sep 1629, still at Bressonaz (Balthazard DeCristaz, notary at Moudon). There are several more baptisms of sons of Jean Dutoit around this time, but without additional identifying information, they cannot be attributed to the present Jean Dutoit.

  2.  Jaquemaz DUTOIT (dates unknown)

Appears as an adult in records from the district of Oron as early as 1574. Until his death is noted about 1612 (records of an unknown notary identified as ACV DO 42/3, 01 apr 1612), he seems always to be referred to as "Jean Dutoit de Palzieux". By that time, his father was apparently already dead, but Jean had a brother Antoine "de Palzieux".

Father: Jaques DUTOIT (d. AFT 1648)
Mother: Salom OLEVEY (d. ABT 1625)

Baptism not yet identified, probably baptised at Moudon rather than Vevey, where all existing baptismal records have been assigned. Adult, apparently, by 1645, when he and his brother Pierre acknowledge a debt to Jaques Tacheron, minister at Syens (Faucherres, notary, ACV DL 40/7). He is identified as a couturier at that time, like his father.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I3853)

Father: Pierre DUTOIT (b. BEF 1570)
Mother: Salom RUBATTEL (d. BEF 1629)

Family 1 : Paule DECONCHES (d. AFT 1704)
  1. +Gaspard DUTOIT (b. 1659, d. 1708)
  2. +Antoinette DUTOIT (b. BEF 1670)

Biographical details from La France Protestant (2d. Ed.) and Livre du Recteur de l'Acadmie de Genve show that he served as minister at Le Cheylard and Vallon, Ardche, France, then in the Pays de Vaud at L'Isle 1673-1681 and Rolle 1682-1691, where he died. His final tenure in France (Le Cheylard, 1669-1670) was terminated because he was a foreigner, and he is identified as bourgeois of both Moudon and Vevey. He was enrolled at the Acadmie de Lausanne as early as 1636. See also Arnaud's Histoire des Protestants du Vivarais et du Velay (1888). The existence of a debt for which he and his wife were creditors dated 01 jan 1692 is signaled in a document of Philippe Favre, notary at Moudon 08 jul 1704, proving that he did not die in 1691 as indicated above, but likely soon after.

It seems most likely that he should have been the son of Pierre Dutoit and Salom Rubattel baptised in 1618, but we first thought that Jean Dutoit was the one who married Annelle Demierre. It may be that we can eventually prove that the Jean Dutoit who married Annelle Demierre was not the son of Pierre. For the moment, we note that Salom was herself the daughter of a minister, and she had at least two brothers who were notaries. Her son Franois Dutoit was a notary, and his son Pierre, also a notary, recognized the close (but unspecified) relationship to Jean Dutoit the minister. Pierre's daughter Jeanne Marie married Jean Mathieu, grandson of Jean Dutoit the minister. If our analysis is correct, the Jean Mathieu and Jeanne Marie were second cousins, a permissible degree of consanguinity under the strict rules of the Bernese authorities. One difficulty, however, is that the other person stated to be a relative of Gaspard, the relationship given in the same document of 27 jul 1719 recorded by Pierre Dutoit, was Jean Benoit Dutoit the elder (b. 1657), who appears to be a fourth cousin of Pierre (these two men were giving their consent for Gaspard's widow to sell his estate in France). If such remote relationships were recognized at that time in Vevey, the argument for the parentage of the minister Jean Dutoit rests mainly on the social class and professional relationships of his supposed parents. It is also possible that Pierre felt the need to assist Gaspard's widow, and, in order to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, called in the first available Dutoit in Vevey to provide legitimacy to the required document. Pierre had already recorded Jean Benoit's testament in 1708, so the two men knew each other.

The circumstances under which he had to leave his ministry in France have been repeated in several published accounts, but the original document has not previously been identified. The records of the reformed synods in "Srie TT" of the French National Archives are available on microfilm through the Family History Library. TT 232 (FHL microfilm #1344541) contains records of a synod held in December, 1670 at Annonay. Dutoit was not present, being "indisposed", but he and the minister Detournes were the subject of an order to leave France: (19 dec 1670) "Detournes et Dutoict — Mr. le commissaire a reprzent la compagnie qu'il lui a est remise par M. de Bezons, Intentant, une lettre de cachet du 15 novembre dernier adresse mondit seigneur de Bezons par lequelle il est ordonn qu'incontinent apres laditte lettre receue, il aye empecher lesdits sieurs Detournes et Dutoict, ministres de la province, de contignuer le service de leur ministere dans les Esglises de Vivaretz dont ils sont ministres, attendu qu'ils sont estrangers..." A message containing this news was dispatched to Dutoit, and his reply was recorded by the synod 24 dec 1670. He stated that he was prepared to obey the order, even though he had a brevet of 11 jul 1667 permitting him to exercise his ministry in spite of the fact that he was a foreigner. The synod provided him with a letter of recommendation. Very soon after this synod, a royal order dissolved the consistory of Annonay and appointed a new one.

  2.  Jean DUTOIT (bp. 27 SEP 1643)
  3.  Gaspard DUTOIT (bp. MAY 1645)

The baptism of 15 apr 1620 is probably his, since there does not seem to have been another Jean Dutoit of Chavannes baptising children at this time. The identification of his father Jean Dutoit as the couturier is based on the baptism of his previous child, Jaquemaz, where he is listed as couturier of Chavannes.

Jean DUTOIT       (ID #I2416)

(male)
Father: Jean DUTOIT (bp. 21 OCT 1584, d. BEF 1660)
Mother: Anne (Annelle) DECREVEL (d. aft 1668)

Family 1 : Marie FUDRI (d. BEF 1694)

This Jean has been hard to tie to the rest of the clan. He is the second husband of Marie Fudri, and noted as conseiller about 1675-1677, but shortly after his marriage to Marie he is called "hoste", or innkeeper (Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, 19 aug 1659). He had a brother Jaques, deceased by 1665 leaving children (nephews of Jean). His marriage contract also notes that he had a cousin Daniel Franois Veyre. He apparently had a brother Philippe, with whom Jean Dutoit the conseiller appears in 1675 settling their joint inheritance from their father, who is not named. A mention of Jean Dutoit conseiller in 1677 is definitely him, because he is acting for his step-daughter Anne, recently married to Denis Besanon (Denis Burnand, notary at Moudon, 21 mar 1677).

The parentage of Jean the hoste and conseiller thus depends on the identity of his relatives. Documents recorded by Abraham Faucherres, notary at Moudon, 07 oct 1675, concern Jean Dutoit and his brother Philippe Dutoit regarding their inheritance from their father. One of these documents calls Jean Dutoit conseiller. The same notary recorded a document on 09 mar 1675, in which "Spectable et Savant Abraham Dutoit" settles his inheritance with his brother Philippe Dutoit. It seems reasonable to assume that this document concerns the same Philippe, and therefore that Abraham is also a brother of Jean the conseiller.

However, another document, recorded 16 sep 1660 by Pierre Gavin, notary at Moudon, involves and agreement between "Spectable Abraham Dutoit", son of the late Jean Dutoit and student in philosophy at Lausanne, and his brother Philippe. There is also a document of 01 jun 1661 involving Jaques Dutoit, marschal, and his brother Philippe, presumably the same Philippe brother of "Spectable" Abraham. It was certainly possible in those days to be a student of philosophy and to passed the examination to enter higher studies by age 14, but if he were really so young in 1660, he should have been represented by a guardian ("tuteur"). Thus, the Abraham named in this record should have been born no later than about 1640, and likewise for his brother. Whoever they are, they cannot be sons of Jean Dutoit the conseiller, as he was still alive as late as 1677. And the Philippe from 1660 cannot be the Philippe who was the son of Pierre Dutoit and Jeanne de Palzieux, because the latter Philippe was not born until 1659. But who was the "Spectable" Abraham, and can we be sure he is not the same man cited in 1675? And when was Abraham Andr Dutoit, the minister who served at Cotterd, Syens, and elsewhere, ordained?

Since Abraham Andr Dutoit, the minister at Cotterd, would have been only 13 in 1675, it does not seem possible that he would have been called "Spectable et Savant" at that time, nor could he have entered into an agreement by himself. So, the transaction of 09 mar 1675 probably involves Abraham Dutoit the schoolmaster and his brother Philippe, rather than children of Pierre Dutoit and Jeanne de Palzieux, even though Pierre certainly died about that time. This leaves only the documents dated 07 oct 1675 as establishing that Jean Dutoit the conseiller had a brother Philippe.

The minister Abraham Andr Dutoit's parentage is established by his relation to his brother Philippe, son of Pierre Dutoit and Jeanne de Palzieux, and we can identify a very likely baptism attended by Andr Falconnet, evidently a relative of Jeanne de Palzieux (dit Falconnet -- these two surnames are always interchangeable, and Jeanne herself is sometimes called Falconnet in the church records at Moudon). That leaves the matter of Jean the conseiller still unresolved; it is necessary to know which Philippe, if any, was his brother. It is possible that the answer may yet be found by reviewing the various properties bought and sold by these parties beginning in 1660.

Now, Jean the hoste conseiller seems to be the only Jean son of a Jean Dutoit (except for one at Chesalles) active in the mid-17th Century. Therefore, he may have been the subject of the baptism of 15 apr 1620, which specifies Jean son of Jean Dutoit of Chavannes, with one of the sponsors Jeanne daughter of Daniel Dutoit. As late as 1617, Jean Dutoit the couturier, son of Claude, seems to have been living in Chavannes, but there may be other possibilities. The Daniel Dutoit in question is also uncertain, because there were two early Daniels of the same generation, and no children known for one of them, Daniel son of Franois, who married Susanne Veyre.

A number of documents show that he was quite active after his marriage to Marie Fudri, perhaps because of the additional capital available to him as a result of the marriage.

Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, 19 aug 1659: Jean Dutoit, hoste, step-father of the children of the late Gabriel Dutoit, is owed by the heirs of the late Jean Jaques Cler, bourgeois de Moudon, for a debt due to the late Gabriel. (Does this concern an actual Cler/Clerc family, or is this a reference to Dutoit dit "au Clerc"?)

Pierre Gavin, notary at Moudon, 17 sep 1660: David Dutoit, couturier of Moudon, confesses he has received of Jean Dutoit, hoste of the said place, in the name of the heirs of the late Gabriel Dutoit, the sum of 188 florins from an obligation due to the late Gabriel from 1651, recorded by Eg. Giraudet.

Pierre Gavin, notary at Moudon, 11 feb 1661: Jean Dutoit, hoste, acting in the name of the children of the late Gabriel Dutoit, rents a property for 9 years to Antoine Dutoit of Chavannes.

[they make a settlement.]

[If the original debts can be located, we might learn the identity of Jean's brother Jaques. The names of the children of Jaques are not given in the document of 1665.]

Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, 01 jul 1669: Marriage contract between Abraham son of Spectable Guillaume DeMont, schoolmaster and bourgeois of Moudon, and Marie, daughter of the late Gabriel Dutoit, in his lifetime hoste and bourgeois de Moudon, represented by her step-father the conseiller Jean Dutoit and her mother Marie Fudri, and Marie's brother Pierre Dutoit.

There are some additional documents mentioning Jean Dutoit, conseiller, but the context has so far not permitted us to conclude with absolute certainty that this is the same man. However, nothing has surfaced so far to suggest a contrary hypothesis.

Benoit Giraudet, notary at Moudon, 29 sep 1672.
