Mahala is listed as Mahalia Garrison in the 1996 Ancestral File. The name is probably Garrison, but in the 1850 census we find Catherine Goressen living with the Barnett family.
A death notice of a son by a prior marriage is mentioned on Find-a-Grave: Oliver Milton Creasor (b. about 1835, died 12 may 1893 at Dixmont State Hospital, Kilbuck Tp., Allegheny Co., PA, "Death Notice: Gathered to Rest -- Oliver Milton Cresser died at Dixmont Friday at 8 P.M., and was buried from Samson's chapel on Sixth avenue, yesterday afternoon. He was the son of Mrs. Robert Barnett, of Bedford avenue, by her first marriage, and a nephew of Abram Garrison Publication Source: The Pittsburg Press on Monday 15 May 1893; Page 5 Repository: Google News."
Mahala or Mahalia died the next year, and there is an obituary posted for her on Find-a-Grave as well: "The Death Roll -- Mrs. Mahala Garrison Barnett, wife of Robert Barnett, Sr., died Tuesday at the family residence on Bedford avenue. Mrs. Barnett was a member of the old New York family of Garrisons and was born at Ft. Montgomery, N.Y. She was a sister of the famous Commodore Garrison of New York and also of the late Abram Garrison, president of the Diamond National bank of this city. She had resided in Pittsburgh for twenty years. As a member of the Methodist Episcopal church she was a consistent Christian and esteemed by all who knew her. A husband, four sons and one daughter survive her. The funeral will take place to-day. Spelling of the surname varies, Creaser, Cresser, etc., sometimes with a K. His relationship to the Barnett family was problematic until we found death notices for his family on Find-a-Grave: "Death Notice: Gathered to Rest -- Oliver Milton Cresser died at Dixmont Friday [12 may 1893] at 8 P.M., and was buried from Samson's chapel on Sixth avenue, yesterday afternoon.
