John as a Scotch Quaker who came to Virginia
John Drummond first appears on the Accomack Co. VA tithablelist in 1664 with three tithables and in other years through 1695 withfive tithables.
He was mentioned in Accomack Co. VA records in 1668 when he andhis sons were legatees in the will of William Grower a neighbor. Hewas granted a certificate for 800 acres of land in Accomack Co. VA on18 Sept 1672. He was a witness or an executor of wills of many friendsliving in the Hunting Creek section of the county during the lastquarter of the 17th century.
On 3 August 1697 Edward Nickson of Accomack Co. shoemaker setover to John Drummond (and others), all of the said county, and totheir heirs, executors and assigns, forever one acre of land...atGilford Creek...for the use and behalf of the people of God calledQuakers, that they shall
have the right to meet there and there to bury their dead.
John Drummond's name was on the Quit Rent Rolls of 1704 with 1550acres. His will dated 10 Oct 1713 names his children and grandchildrenScarburgh and Richard his brother. In religious belief he was a Quaker. When attesting to the will of George Johnson Elder and Quaker he declared "According to the manner and fashion of their religion that he saw him sign the will. In June 1692 he made the following statement: Whereas the late act of Parliament does Injoyne all Protestant dissenters from the Church of England to Signifie...the places of their meetings to performe divine worship; In obedience to which Act we the people commonly called Quaker doe constantly meet on the first day of the week called Sunday at our meeting house built for that use near Gilford in this county."
Will
Will of John Drummond: In the Name of God Amen. I John Drummond of the County of Accomack being weak of body but of full and perfect memory and confessing the uncertainty of man's life doe therefore make and appoint this to be my last W&T in manner and form following (the piety bit). I do G&B to my two Son James & Robert and to their Lawfull heirs for ever all that parcel of Land lying and being SeaSide Containing five hundred and fifty acres to be equally divided between them and my son James to have that part lying on Arcadia Branch and if Either of my said sons should die without Lawfull heir of his body begotten then my will is that his part so dying shall falland return to the Survivour and to his Lawfull heirs as aforesaid I do also give to my Son Robert my best Chest commonly Called the Dutch Chest with all this is therein with my horse bridle and saddle.I do also give to my son Richard my Great ?Aillards. I do also g&B to my son Hill Drummond one steer and one cow. I do also G&B to my Granddaughter Patience Allen one Gold Ring. I also G&B to my Daughter Margaret Bagwell two Cowes and because I have formerly given to my Daughter Mary Chance a part of my estate Such as I thought Fit --therefore I doe G&B unto her one ewe. I doe also G&B to my Grandson John Drummond the sun of Hill Drummond one cow and calf and whereas my Son John has alienated and confirmed to my son Robert a parcol of Land Containing by examination one hunderd acres and therefore my will is that if my said son John his heirs or assigns or anyother person or persons claiming any right title or Interest to the sd Land by from orunder him He at any time hereafter Trouble Disquiet or Molest my saidson Robert his heirs or assigns Shall forfeit and loose all and every part of my Estate or the full Value there of To my son Robert or his heirs I do also nominate and appoint my five sons (viz) Richard Hill James Drake and Robert to be my full and whole Executors to see this my Will performed in all points According to the true intent and meaning thereof and all the rest of my estate my just Debts being paid I do G&B to my foure sons James Drake Robert and John to be equally divided among them excepting my Coopers & Carpenters Tools which I give to my son Robert wholy I Say Provided my son John in Consideration of his part of my Estate to confirm the aforesd parcel of Land to my Son Robert and his heirs in as full and ample manner as the Law can Devise other wise he the sd John to have for his part or portion twelve pence as his full part of my Estate. I doe also G&B to my Grandson James Allen one Cow and Calf. I do aslo G&B to my two Grandsons Scarburgh and Richard his Brother each of them twenty shillings or the value thereof as a token of my Love. I do also G&B to my son Richard Drummond two of my best Stears and my Son Hill to have his next Choice and to my Grandson Richard Drummond one Stear of four years old all which I do Confirm in Witness my hand a this 10thd day of the month Called October 1713.
