Edmund II, called “Ironside” because of his courage in battle, became King of England the same year he died, 1016.

Edmund had been prominent in the fighting against Canute. Upon Ethelred’s death, Edmund was proclaimed King although Canute received the support of over half of England. After the Battle of Assandun on October 18, 1016, he and Canute came to terms and partitioned England, but Edmund died the next month.
