John Marshall was beseiged at Newbury Castle in 1152 by King Stephen. His youngest son, William, was taken as a hostage by the King’s forces. The King threatened to kill the little boy if John did not surrender. John’s reply showed that he thought much more of his title than he thought of his own children. William was later released unharmed by the King.
