Misc. Notes
Decourcey J. Rudd (Dick Rudd) was killed Wednesday evening January 28, 1874 by a fall from a horse. We paid a visit to Dunbar & Waldo's livery stable upon hearing the name and there, found the bloody corpse of the deceased, as it had been a few moments before, brought into the barn. We learned from Mr. Dunbar the following account of the accident. The deceased was in the employ of Dunbar and Waldo, and on the morning of his death started on horseback to go up to jack Pethoud's on an errand to that gentleman for Mr. Dunbar. He rode a pony from the stable taking him from the stall as he had stood without a bridle or saddle. He started off on a canter and when in front of Mr. Spellman's, not more than a hundred yards from the stable, struck the horse two or three times with the end of the halter. At this, the pony kicked up, and then jumped suddenly to one side, throwing Dick off on the other side. He struck the frozen ground directly on his head, the concussion breaking the blood vessel and causing his instantaneousd death. He was picked up and taken to the barn, the blood flowing from his mouth and ears in torrents and Dr. Sprague was called, nothing could be done for the poor fellow. His earthly career was ended.
The deceased was 38 years old and a widower, his wife having died last fall. He has one child, which is with his uncle, D. F. Rudd, who lives in Thayer Co. He has a half brother also, David Rudd, in the same county. The news of the death of their relative was immediately sent to them. Mr. Rudd is an old settler of Nebraska, and had been much in the mountains and beyond. He was not a man of polish or education, but was kind, generous and frank to a fault.
His funeral will take place Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the Presbyterian Church. Alder Williams will conduct the services.
