292He raised a large family and lived near Crowder Creek in York County, South Carlina. The executors of his will were the son, Joseph B. Stewart, and John A. Laney. Archibald gave to his eldest son, William, 100 acres of land, to be laid off where William lived, “upon condition that he pay to my four youngest daughters, namely, Jane, Ann, Margaret, and Sarah, $200 to be equally divided.” He gave to his youngest son, Joseph B. Stewart, the remainder of the tract on Crowder Creek, “while my four daughters (already named) remain single.” He gave “to my grandson James M. Stuart (stead of his mother Agnes Stuart) $20 or a young horse of the same value, when 21.” The remainder was to be divided equally among his children Joseph, Jane, Ann, Margaret and Sarah Stewart. The will was in contest in the court of equity in 1836 and 1837 to determine the condition under which Archibald devised his land to his sons William and Joseph B. Stewart.
