Was in Civil War
Enlisted in col. Fagg’s 5th Regiment of the Missouri State Militia, Company G on September 7, 1861 in Louisiana, Missouri. They guarded bridges in Franklin County, Missouri and had other duty at Troy, Louisiana, Ashley, Wellsville, and Bowling Green, Missouri. This was a six month militia and Mathias was discharged on February 7, 1862. Mathias was then “drafted” into the 49th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia, Company C, on August 9, 1862. They were stationed in northern Missouri and were involved in a skirmish with Confederate soldiers in Ashley, Pike County, Missouri on August 28, 1862. Mathias’ brother William H. was said to have been a bushwacker and rode with Sterling Price and General Mcgowen for the Confederacy in Missouri. The other brothers Joshua and james were also in the 49th E.M.M. Mathias was relieved from duty of the 49th E.M.M. on January 25, 1863 and was recalled April 30, 1863 when he paid a commutation tax which made him exempt from any further service.
