Military
Must have been very young while serving as a ferrier in Lee’s Legion (Col. Light Horse Harry Lee’s Legion).

He applied for his military pension on 5 Jan 1829. At that time he was residing in Miami Township, Green County, Ohio and was about 68 years old. A note in his file says: “In 1806 he was a resident of Montgomery County, Maryland.” Col. Lee wrote two notes to help Nicholas prove his service in the war which are included in his file. His pension application is indexed as: Continental Line from Maryland, residing Ohio, #S46340; BLWt 1169-100:

“Nicholas Rhoades Rev. War Pension application—S 46340

11 March 1826, affidavit by Nicholas Rhoades states he is a resident of Greene County, Ohio and is 65 years old. He enlisted in the year 1780 in Colonel Henry Lee’s Legion for the duration of the war.

Letter from Colonel Henry Lee Feb. 22, 1806: “I do hereby certify that Nicholas Rhoades resided in the County of Montgomery, state of Maryland, enlisted in the Cavalry of the Partizan Legion for and during the war and served faithfully to the end thereof. In the War Office in the City of Washington must be found returns of my legion in which will be found Nicholas Rhoades as he enlisted at Leesburg he probably will be placed to the quota of Virginia and if so he has a right to the land bounty given by that state to its soldiers. /S/ Henry Lee, Late Lt. Col., Partizan Legion.”

(BLWt 1169, 100 acres issued)

Misc. Notes
Wife listed as Elizabeth Taylor in NSDAR 45408 - Phebe Rhodes Dresser, born in Urbana, IL; wife of Herman L. Dresser

Did you see in one of the old DAR applications a statement to the effect that Elizabeth Taylor or Frances Taylor (wife of Nicholas Rhoades, mother of Walter) was a first cousin of Zachary Taylor? I have always been curious about this.411

Martin M. Harry’s bio from the 1918 History of Champaign County, also states that Mrs. Harry’s (Jemima M. Boyd) gr-grandmother was a first cousin to President Zachary Taylor. That would be Elizabeth/Frances Taylor, wife of Nicholas Rhoades.
