Urbana — Funeral services for Fred D. Smith, 98 of 101 W. Windsor Road, U, formerly of Route 2, U, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Road, U. The Rev. Jack Woods will officiate.
Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Mayview.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith died at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 7, 1996) at clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana.
He was born March 5, 1897, at Urbana, a son of David M. and Clara A. Fitch Smith. He married Elsie M. Johnson on Dec. 12, 1917, at Urbana. She died Nov. 5, 1974.
Survivors include two sons, David Smith of Philo and Fred J. Smith of Urbana; two daughters, Frances Apperson of Tucson, Ariz., and Clara Nelle Pelfrey of Champaign; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.
Mr. Smith was a farmer and a member of the Mayview Methodist Church and the Champaign County Farm Bureau.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Carle Hospice or an organization of the donor’s choice.

MRS. FRED SMITH
Mrs. Fred (Elsie) Smith, 77, Route 2, U., died at 5 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 5, 1974) at Carle Foundation Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Renner-Wikoff Chapel. Rev. Mike Eischen will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Mayview. There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 26, 1897 in Urbana, a daughter of Frank and Nellie Robutes Johnson. She married Fred D. Smith on Dec. 12, 1917 in Urbana.
Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. R. L. (Frances) Apperson, Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. William (Clara Nell) Pelfrey, Champaign; two sons, David, Philo, and Fred, Urbana; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother Joe B. Johnson, Libertyville; and four sisters, Mrs. Daisy Conrad, Mahomet; Miss Foethel
