Obituary
David M. Smith, Urbana Pioneer, Long Ill, Dies
David Middleton Smith, who has watched Urbana grow from a few wooden shacks to its present size in the 86 years he has lived in and near the city, died at 2:50 a.m. Wednesday after a long illness.
One of the oldest native sons of the community, Mr. Smith was born on a farm just east of Urbana, son of Jacob and Margaret Beatty Smith, Sept. 19, 1851. His parents were among the early settlers of Champaign county, having moved here Oct. 16, 1833, from Shelbyville, Ky.
His mother and father erected a log cabin and lean-to on the site of the farm on which Mr. Smith was born and sent practically all his life.
Mrs. Smith, with whom her husband would have celebrated their 62d wedding anniversary March 2, was Miss Clara Fitch, Urbana, who came to the city when 14. They were married March 2, 1875.

Besides his widow, Mr. Smith is survived by the following children:
Mrs. Richard Marriott, Urbana, Mrs. Fred Stevens, Urbana, Fred David Smith, near Urbana, and Mrs. George Townsend, Urbana. One brother, Mervin Smith, East of Urbana, survives, as well as ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
