He was said to have bought land in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1778, where he entered claim to 100 acres on the heead waters of North Crooked Creek, which included the Coalkiln Spring, on February 21, 1778. He was granted a patent on it, March 1, 1780, which means he must have been farming it. He bought, in November of 1784, 96 acres from William and Ruth Caldwell. He bought at a Sheriff’s Sale, June 18, 1785, 100 acres along Caldwell’s Creek. This was land the previous owners had fled and let the taxes go unpaid. By 1795 Samuel had purchased 87 more acres. He and his family disappeared from the state by 1800. The 1790 census listed them as 1-3-5.294
