Misc. Notes
Tradition has it that Alexander was twice married and had three sons - John, Samuel and Joseph, by his first wife. By his second wife he had - William, Archibald and Alexander. The names of his wives are uncertain and he may have had several daughters. Some information has been found that Alexander may have been married to a Miss Barber who was the daughter of John Barber, Jr. of South Carolina.
Alexander removed his family to America in 1758 before the Revolution. Also, tradition has it that his oldest son, John, came to America before his father, around 1745, and was a clerk of the court of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. John was said to have changed the spelling of his surname, Stuart, for the better English, Stewart. They resided in Pennsylvania until about 1768 when they moved to York District, South Carolina, with the exception of John who stayed and raised his family in Pennsylvania. The J. Adger Stewart Chart shows that Alexander Stewart may have had several daughters and it is possible that there were more sons than are listed here.
