Left South Carolina for Ohio when an old man.292

During the middle 1700s, the governor of South Carolina had advertised in Ireland that the area 30 miles north of Columbia, South Carolina (Fairfield and Chester counties) would be given away to anyone who would inhabit it. One hundred acres to the heads of households and 50 acres to each family member.293

William K. Stewart came with the rest of the family to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1758.

On May 4, 1769 William received a grant of land from King George III for 300 acres of land on Millstone Branch between the Wakhaw and Twelve Mile Creeks. The land was on the east side of the Catawaba River. 294

William and his family lived in York County, South Carolina until 1818, when they removed to Xenia, Ohio. Most of them took up farming east and northeast of Xenia, Ohio.294

Some records have William K. Stewart married in South Carolina to Sarah Calhoun and later moving to Ohio with at least one son, Samuel (1775-1846). In an article written in the Stewart Clan Magazine some old letters owned by Mrs. Charles M. Kelso of Dayton, Ohio, show another twist on this information. According to a letter written in 1915, William was twice married. To his first wife he had 6 children and by his second wife he had Samuel, Robert, and Elizabeth Stewart who became the wife of Alexander Harbison. Another letter reads that Samuel and Robert came to Greene County, Ohio with their father, about 1818. More research is needed on the marriages and which children went with what family.294

William is buried in Woodland Cemetery, Xenia, Green County, Ohio. He emigrated with the rest of the family to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1758. He was an American Revolutionary War soldier and served as a Private in Captain Felix Worley’s Company of the 3rd Regiment of South Carolina Scouts, commanded by Colonel William L. Thompson. In the pension department of the National Archives, his name apears, dated 1779. He was commended to be paid and his name then appears on the payroll.

On May 5, 1769, William received a grant of land from King George III for 300 acres of land on the Millstone Branch between the Wakhaw and Twelve Mile Creeks. This land was on the east side of the Catawba River. His wife is buried in the Old (ARP) Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina. William and his family lived in York County until 1818, when they removed to Xenia, Ohio.

A hand-written record by Robert Bruce and copied by James R. Harbison lists Sarah Calhoun as the spouse of William while a DAR record lists his spouse as Jane (no surname). Another record shows Jane as Jane “Jennet” Martin.
