Misc. Notes
Of Frederick’s sons, John has been the most difficult to trace. In her manuscript about the Hartle family, Sarah V. Larimer stated that John had settled in Miami County, Ohio [Sarah V. Larimer manuscript, p. 3]. If John did go to Miami County, he returned to Pennsylvania within a few years. His wife, Margaret Keith, was from Pennsylvania in the area of Morrison’s Cove. Their eldest child, Hetty (m. John Daily), was born around 1820 [Deed Book U, p. 322, Bedford Co., PA]. Their other children were John, Peter, Margaret (m. Basil J. Daniels), Elizabeth and Jacob.

The family can be found in the 1840 census in North Woodberry Township, Bedford County (later Blair County) under the name John Harkle. John’s wife died on 7 March 1841 and he bought a farm in North Woodberry township on 3 April 1841 [Blair Co. 1846 Tax Records, North Woodberry Twp, Blair County Genealogical Society Library, Hollidaysburg, PA]. Blair County was established in 1846, and in that year John was taxed on the 239 acre farm, 3 horses and 3 cows. His sons John and Peter appear on the tax record as single freemen [Blair Co. 1846 Tax Records, North Woodberry Twp, Blair County Genealogical Society Library, Hollidaysburg, PA].

In the 1850 census John is shown at the same location, and all of the above children are still at home. John died 8 July 1853, and he and Margaret are buried in the Spring Hope Cemetery in Martinsburg [Tombstone inscriptions, Spring Hope Cemetery, Martinsburg, PA].66
