Samuel never married. Most of the early Hartle information was taken from Samuel's will.
Samuel Hartle, retired farmer; P.O. Bradford. Samuel Hartle is a son of Frederick Hartle, a native of Blair Co., Penn., who emigrated to Ohio in 1829, and located upon the farm where his son Samuel resides. The subject of this sketch was born in Blair Co., Penn., Sept. 22, 1825; came to Ohio with his parents when quite small; was reared and educated as a farmer; soon after his father’s death, which occurred in 1861, he rented his farm, and has since lived a retired life; he is living a single life, on a No. 1 farm, lying in the northwest part of Newberry Township, and is highly respected by the citizens of his neighborhood.
[The following will and codicil were recorded in the Miami County, Ohio, Probate Court. The original will dated 1 May 1888 was typewritten. The codicil dated 9 July 1888 was written by hand at the bottom of the will, and continued on the back of the same sheet of paper.]
“In the name of the Benevolent Father of All, I Samuel Hartel being of sound mind and disposing memory, uninfluenced by friends or coerced by enemies do make and publish this my last will and testament.
First. I commit my body to the dust from whence it came and my soul to the God who gave it.
Second. I will that all of my just debts and funeral expenses shall be paid by my executor as soon after my decease as may be deemed convenient by my executor.
Third. That my funeral shall be conducted without any ostentation or show, and that a suitable monument shall be erected over my grave.
Fourth. That all of the household and kitchen furniture, beds, bedding and everything contained in the house and used by me and all goods that I may have except money and notes shall go to Judea Tobias to have and to hold to herself, and her heirs forever.
Fifth. That the balance of my property, moneys and notes shall be equally divided between my nephews and Nieces, sons and daughters of my brothers and sisters, share and share alike. Also, Lucy Ann Cease, shall be counted the same as a niece, and receive the same share as the nephews and nieces. She being as near to me as my nephews and nieces.
Sixth. It is my will that each one shall receive the amount due him or her with the same frankness with which I bestow it, and that if any one shall find fault or cause my executor trouble in the execution of this my last will that his or her share shall be divided among the balance of the heirs herein referred to.
Seventh. That I nominate and appoint, A. J. Hartel son of John Hartel to be the Executor of this my last will and testament.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this first day of May 1888.

“It is my will that item
Fifth. in the foregoing will be cancelled and I hereby cancel the same and substitute this in its stead -
Fifth. That out of my estate my executor shall pay to Mary Ann Teague and Warren Hartel, children of Peter Hartel and Fannie Deshman, James F. Martin, D.N. Martin and Mary Halsapple children of Easter Martin, the sum of Five Dollars each & no more -
That the balance of my property, monies notes &c be equally divided between my nephews and nieces by A J Hartel, Samuel Hartel, Fredrick Hartel, Jacob Hartel, Louiza Hartel children of Jacob Hartel, Samuel hartel, Sarah McDowell, Juda Hartel, Catharine Carpenter, Mina Hayworth children of Andrew Hartel. Also, Elizabeth Warner, Lavina Mowery, Columbus Hartel, Fredrick Hartel, Albert Hartel, Calvin Hartel, Ora Hartel, Frank Hartel, children of James Hartel. Also Ophelia Zornell, Barbara Tobias, Ida Tobias, Betta Hoffman, children of Janie Tobias. Also Lavina Tobias and Andrew Tobias, children of Juda Tobias. Also A J Hartel, Anna Ingle & Elizabeth Tobias children of John Hartel, and Lucy Ann Cease included she being as near to me as a niece - If either one of my Nephews or nieces name does not appear in this codicil it is my will and desire that his or her name shall be inserted and receive an equal share with those last mentioned.
